India’s Shikhar Dhawan and England’s Jack Burnham have scored the most hundreds in Under-19 World Cup.

Both Dhawan and Burnham have registered three centuries in the ICC Under-19 World Cup, the highest number of tons by any batter in the tournament.

In the 2004 edition of the Under-19 World Cup held in Bangladesh, the southpaw smashed unbeaten 138-ball 155 against Scotland to guide India to a score of 425/3. This went down as the Delhi-born cricketer’s highest score at Under-19 World Cup.

Dhawan followed it by scoring 120 off 148 balls against hosts Bangladesh and 136-ball 146 versus Sri Lanka.

In the 2016 edition of the Under-19 World Cup in Bangladesh, Jack Burnham replicated Dhawan’s feat by scoring three hundreds in the high-profile tournament.

The right-handed English batter smashed centuries against Fiji (148), Zimbabwe (106 not out) and Namibia (109).

Apart from Dhawan and Burnham, there have been 10 players who have scored two centuries in the Under-19 World Cup. The list includes Eoin Morgan (England), Babar Azam (Pakistan), Anamul Haque (Bangladesh), Brett Williams (Australia), Lendl Simmons (West Indies), Alick Athanaze (West Indies), Alastair Cook (England), Aiden Markram (South Africa), Raynard Van Tonder (South Africa) and Brendan Taylor (Zimbabwe).

Among these, Taylor, Haque, Azam, Morgan and Simmons are the only batters to score centuries in more than one edition of the Under-19 World Cup.

To stay on top of their game, cricketers have to maintain consistency in their performances while keeping fit and fulfilling the other obligations that come with being in the spotlight.

However, for many players who satisfy all these criteria, their star fades when pushed past the orbit of domestic matches and into the thick of international space.

We look at five such players who were certainly loaded with the right amount of talent and tenacity to make it big, but after strong performances in the domestic circuit as well as prestigious T20 tournaments, a dearth of form at the international level all but put paid to their future prospects.

Manish Pandey

Having the special distinction of being the first Indian batsman to score a century in the Indian Premier League (IPL) did a world of good for Manish Pandey, as he went on to win two IPL titles with Kolkata Knight Riders during his never-ending love affair with the side.

Pandey was also a part of the Under-19 side which won the 2008 World Cup in Malaysia and has been a mainstay for Royal Challengers Bangalore, Kolkata Knight Riders and Sunrisers Hyderabad during his IPL career. Apart from this, he represents the Karnataka team in the domestic circuit. However, his showings on the international front have left something to be desired.

Having made his One-Day International (ODI) debut in 2015, Pandey has played just 26 ODIs, scoring 492 runs. The middle-order batsman has time and again been unable to replicate his IPL performances for the national team, and at 30, he is yet to make his Test debut as well. An explosive batsman, he has been playing regularly in recent times and will look to impress selectors before the T20 World Cup squads are announced.

D’Arcy Short

Australian opener D’Arcy Short had the chance to be one of Australia’s most explosive batsmen during the suspension of David Warner due to the ‘Sandpapergate?scandal. Representing Hobart Hurricanes in the Big Bash League (BBL), Short is among the highest run-getters in the T20 tournament. In the nine games he has played, he has scored 357 runs at a strike rate of 131.25.

Read | Top five one season wonders of the IPL

With his highest List-A score reading 257, it is a surprise that Short has been unable to replicate his game on the international level. He has played 20 T20Is and eight ODIs, failing to hit a century in any of the formats. Whilst his T20 stats are better, he averages a meagre 30 in the 50-over format.

Short was recently part of the ODI team for the series against New Zealand, but unless the southpaw improves his performances, he might not feature for the Aussies as often as he would like. At 29, and with a lot of competition, he might be nearing the end of his international career.

Jaydev Unadkat

For someone who made his ODI debut in 2013, Jaydev Unadkat has only contested seven matches since then -- an appalling statistic, given the talent Unadkat seemingly possesses. His Test debut came earlier than that, in 2010 against South Africa in Centurion, conceding 101 runs at an average of 3.88 without picking up a single wicket.

These numbers are quite surprising considering the level of performances Unadkat displayed in the domestic sphere of the game. Then 18, his left-arm seam bowling seemed favourable for the Indian team but his subpar performances have ensured he doesn’t make another Test appearance for his side.

His game in the shorter format has been marginally better, having picked up only eight and 14 wickets respectively in the seven ODIs and 10 T20 Internationals he has played in. Unadkat last featured for India in March 2018 in the Nidahas Trophy.

He has shone in the IPL on occasion, having played for a plethora of clubs over the last 10 years. His best season was the 2017 edition, where he led Rising Pune Supergiants to the finals, making him the costliest buy in the next IPL auction.

However, he hasn’t been able to reach the same heights since, but the captaincy of his domestic side, and his consistency, might make a case for the 28-year-old left arm seamer.

Fakhar Zaman

Pakistan opener Fakhar Zaman could have been one of Pakistan’s most prolific batsmen but his hard-hitting and ability to score quick runs failed to do him a world of good after a dismal outing at the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup in England last year.

Read | Four most underrated IPL openers

Zaman’s shot to fame was the famous century against India in the 2017 Champions Trophy, before becoming the first Pakistani player to score an ODI double century. However, in his 46 ODIs, the southpaw has only managed 1958 runs, with four of them being centuries.

After the World Cup, he was dropped for more capable candidates. He played against Sri Lanka in their last ODI series before the global pandemic and managed 50+ scores in both the games, helping his side to a win. With Pakistan touring England in their first series after the pandemic, Zaman will be keen on making an impression or risk his career fading out.

Aiden Markram

Aiden Markram was earmarked as the next big thing in international cricket after captaining South Africa to the Under-19 trophy in 2014, the country’s only ICC trophy in the current century. Markram had an average of over 50 in First-class and List-A competitions, leading to call-ups to the national team in 2017. However, things haven’t been the same for the young opener.

During the India tour of South Africa, Markram showed glimpses of his true form after playing exceptionally well for the Proteas. He even won praise from Indian skipper Virat Kohli and was named the captain of the ODI series in the absence of Faf du Plessis. But like many fading talents, Markram couldn’t make the most of the opportunities.

He is yet to feature in an ODI for the Proteas since the World Cup while playing only two T20Is in his career. In his 26 ODIs, he averages a measly 27.95, and in his 20 Tests, he has an average of 28. 48. He last featured for the Proteas against England before an injury sidelined him. However, at 25, he is considerably younger than the other members of this list, making a comeback easier.

As the sporting action resumes around the globe in empty stadiums amid the global pandemic, cricket too will be ending its hiatus soon as South Africa’s finest cricketers will compete in an exhibition match titled the ‘Solidarity Cup?on June 27.

However, it will not be just a run of the mill cricket contest. The fundraiser match will debut a new format called 3T Cricket, where three teams of eight will compete for victory.

The three teams competing in the match are as follows:

KG’s Kingfishers: Kagiso Rabada (c), Faf du Plessis, Chris Morris, Tabraiz Shamsi, Reeza Hendricks, Janneman Malan, Heinrich Klaasen, Glenton Stuurman

Quinny’s Kites: Quinton de Kock (c), David Miller, Temba Bavuma, Anrich Nortje, Dwaine Pretorius, Beuran Hendricks, JJ Smuts, Lutho Sipamla

AB’s Eagles: AB de Villiers (c), Aiden Markram, Lungi Ngidi, Andile Phehlukwayo, Rassie van der Dussen, Junior Dala, Kyle Verreynne, Sisanda Magala.

What is 3T Cricket?

As mentioned above, 3T Cricket is a new format that will be making its debut in this match and will feature three teams, as opposed to the traditional two, competing against each other.

The match will be 36 overs long, where each team will bat and bowl six overs each against the other two teams. The match will be split into two halves, with each half consisting of three six-over matches. The order of the matches will be decided by a draw in the first half, and in the second, the team with the highest score will bat first, followed by the team with the second-highest score and lastly, the team with the lowest.

Each team will have eight players but will be allowed to pick three more from the team not competing in the match to field for them when they bowl. The teams will have eight wickets in hand for their quota of 12 overs over two halves. The ‘Last Man Standing?rule will come into play at the fall of the seventh wicket, where the lone batsman can only score in 2s, 4s and 6s. Each bowler will have a quota of three overs over the two halves.

Why this new format?

Cricket has always kept evolving to keep the fans engrossed in the sport. The introduction of shorter formats with smaller boundaries, flatter pitches aimed at high-scoring thrillers has been the mantra of cricket boards around the world to rope in the fans.

The success of T20 paved the way for boards across the globe to experiment with T10, an even shorter version of the sport. 3T Cricket is just another effort by Cricket South Africa to give the sport a new flavour that could maybe go on and become cricket’s next marquee attraction.

However, the failure of splitting a 45-over one-day game into four innings that Cricket Australia experimented with during their 2010-2011 domestic season also shows that not all innovations stick as expected.

It is currently unclear how far 3T Cricket would go, but the competition between three teams and having two halves is certainly unique and will surely pique the interest of the fans that have been starved of their beloved sport for months.

Faf Du Plessis retired as captain of South Africa from Test and T20Is in February 2020, just before the global pandemic gripped the world and brought the sport to a standstill. After a great start to his time as the Proteas skipper, the last year wasn’t as fruitful for the 35-year-old.

During the 2019 ICC Men's Cricket World Cup, South Africa were knocked out of the semi-finals contention quite early in the tournament, after having managed just a single win from their first seven games.

Du Plessis soon called his time as skipper, with Quinton De Kock appointed as captain across the white-ball formats effective immediately. The wicket-keeper has grown into his new role quite comfortably, starring for his side against World Champions England in their first ODI series since they won the World Cup. He hit 107 as the hosts chased down England's 258-8 with 14 balls left. Following his debut against England as a white-ball captain, De Kock secured a 3-0 ODI series victory over visitors Australia in the subsequent series.

While the future of the Proteas seems set to continue under the helm of Quinton De Kock for the shorter formats, Cricket South Africa (CSA) is yet to decide on a captain for the longest format.

With former Test skipper and Proteas legend Graeme Smith now acting as the new director of the CSA, the board is expected to announce their decision as soon as world cricket is deemed fit to resume. Smith recently confirmed that Quinton De Kock will not be the Test captain, while not stating any clear candidates for the job as well.

Read | David Warner or Quinton de Kock - Who is the better T20I opener?

With South Africa not scheduled to play any Test before touring West Indies in July and August, they have some time to decide who will lead them in the red-ball format.

And thus, the question that remains is; ?/span>Who will lead the Test side now??/strong>

Graeme Smith himself was a gamble when he was made their Test captain at the ripe age of 22. He had played just eight Tests when he took over from Shaun Pollock but was one of the most prolific Test captains that the modern game has seen, leading the Proteas for 109 Tests for over 11 years, winning 53 of those matches. Under his leadership, South Africa soared to the pinnacle of the longest format of the game. He scored a record 15 Test hundreds as a captain. Another astounding record is that South Africa never lost a Test when Smith scored a hundred.

Many of their top players have recently announced their retirement, including Vernon Philander, Hashim Amla, AB de Villiers, Dale Steyn (from red-ball cricket), Imran Tahir (from ODIs) and JP Duminy which has seen the Proteas losing a substantial part of their leadership core. During the summer of 2019-20 season, South Africa fielded almost 33 players across all formats, giving debuts to nine players in Test cricket. Of these, those who impressed were; Rassie Van Der Dussen and Anrich Nortje.

And Van Der Dussen’s name came up as a potential Test captain after seeing his ability to handle pressure while maintaining a relatively consistent run rate.

At the 2019 World Cup, Rassie Van Der Dussen was South Africa's second-highest run-scorer behind du Plessis, and fourth-highest in the Test season after de Kock, Dean Elgar and du Plessis.

"The challenge for when we do play some cricket is to see who escalates themselves into really consistent performances and who steps up. Coming from a person who a risk was taken on, it is something we would consider," Smith said when asked about the South African Test captaincy.

These words rightly sum up the aforementioned option for the Proteas, as he has just four Test caps to his name and a solitary First-Class captaincy experience. Van Der Dussen is also a respected figure in the dressing room and oozes a sense of confidence, all attributes of being a perfect Test skipper.

Taking a calculated risk in this aspect is not a new phenomenon for the Proteas, who also have the likes of Temba Bavuma and Aiden Markram in the setup. While Bavuma has the experience of captaining the Lions franchise - who have won the First-Class title for the past two seasons - he was recently dropped from the Test side, before being recalled for the England Tests after a career-best 180. He, however, was unable to replicate the same form.

Meanwhile, Markram led South Africa to the Under-19 World Cup title in 2014, which is the only African nation’s second title in professional cricket till date. He was touted as the future senior men's team skipper but spent the majority of last summer on the sidelines with a fractured finger, incurred during the first Test against England at Centurion in December.

His return was more than meritorious, scoring two centuries in six domestic limited-overs matches and was in line to return to the Test squad before the suspension of the competition. However, no centuries in his last 38 completed innings for South Africa, regardless of format, makes him a less probable option for Test captaincy.

Among the aforementioned players, Markram is undoubtedly more talented than any of the other candidates, despite having had 30 fewer innings than Bavuma. His prowess at opening the batting in all his trips to the Test crease has helped scored three more centuries. However, Bavuma has made 421 more runs than Markram even though he has been shuffled up and down the order, having played in five different places in the top seven, including as an opener.

Another name in the bag is a seasoned First-Class skipper, Dean Elgar. He has 50 games as captain to his name, including nine at the helm of South Africa’s A team. He was also in charge at the 2006 Under-19 World Cup. Elgar is among the more experienced players of the lot, having represented the Proteas in 63 Tests, with an average of 38.49. He, in fact, has been a part of South Africa’s Test setup since November 2012, while Smith was still captain.

One more player who has willingly put his name into the mix is Keshav Maharaj, with the spinner putting himself into contention despite not being among the board’s initial candidates. "I really want to captain the Proteas. It's been my dream. Not many people know that, but those close to me know that I do want to captain the South African team across all three formats," Maharaj said.

While Maharaj's goals are ambitious, he has previous experience which might work in his favour. Maharaj led the Dolphins, in last season's one-day cup, where they were declared winners after the competition was suspended because of the global pandemic.

The Dolphins finished on top of the point tally with seven victories from 10 matches. Maharaj was their leading wicket-taker and fourth-highest overall. Batting wise, he hasn’t really been as prolific, but finished with the second-highest average for the Dolphins, scoring his maiden List-A half-century, which helped his team to a match-winning total in a low-scoring game against the Cobras.

The South African cricketing board has not set a deadline for the announcement of their new Test captain, but with cricket unlikely to resume for the next several months, they are in no hurry to hand out the armband, with Smith bringing his calm persona into his decision making for the CSA.

The new Proteas skipper will need to lead his team at the top, keeping in mind the many limitations to the team due to quota policies. With South Africa having underperformed massively at the World Cup and placed seventh in the ICC World Test Championship, the new skipper will need to be someone who can lead from the front, and who better than one of their greatest legends in Graeme Smith to choose the future skipper of South Africa’s Test team.

South African cricket is undergoing a renaissance with their Test skipper Faf du Plessis giving up captaincy and Director of Cricket, Graeme Smith, stating that Quinton de Kock will not be given the duties like in limited-overs cricket because of workload concerns. This leaves a rather inexperienced Proteas side with very few options on the captaincy front.

Read | Du Plessis quit as captain after one of his career's 'toughest' seasons

With that in mind, we look at four possible leaders for the Proteas in red ball cricket.

Dean Elgar

Having experience in leading the side before, Dean Elgar is South Africa's most glaring choice on the captaincy front. A gritty opener with natural leadership qualities, Elgar is probably as close to Graeme Smith, a successful Test captain, as it comes, and the Proteas might not think twice before handing him the job.

However, what could work against Elgar is his age and current form. More of a blip for the last couple of years, South Africa will want someone with more future in the role now that they are rebuilding.

Temba Bavuma

The incumbent ODI vice-captain, Temba Bavuma's career has been marred in controversy several times. The fact that he comes from a black background means his name would almost always be coupled with the ‘quota?tag despite him justifying his position as a player.

A flamboyant batsman and a natural leader, Bavuma is a fine choice on the captaincy front but it is likely that the Proteas could face some backlash if that were to happen. Given that Bavuma isn't in the best of form either, this could also be a risky choice.

Rassie van der Dussen

At 32 years old, Rassie van der Dussen ought to be more experienced at the international level. Yet, he is only one series old in the format but could well be in line for a huge promotion on the job front.

Read | Four best Test knocks in the 2010s

Van der Dussen has played just four Test matches and moving him up to captain the side could be a big risk. But Graeme Smith himself took over without much captaincy and international experience and it turned out to be a brilliant decision for Proteas cricket.

Smith hinted at being open to taking a calculated risk on the captaincy matter in Test cricket and van der Dussen could fit the bill perfectly. His age isn't ideal but then again, with few options before them, the Proteas might be willing to compromise on that front.

Aiden Markram

Once hurried into the leadership role in limited-overs cricket, Aiden Markram struggled and lost form. His Test exploits have been brilliant so far and his talent is there for everyone to see. But he remains a home player primarily and his record against spinners and in Asia makes him really vulnerable to take on additional captaincy duties.

Markram perhaps needs to focus on his batting to truly realise his potential. South Africa need Markram to be their big batter across all formats in the next decade and burdening him with captaincy now could turn out to be a double-edged sword. They might ponder taking the plunge but it sure comes with dire consequences.

South Africa’s opening batsman, Aiden Markram has been ruled out of the ongoing England series owing to a fractured finger.

The 25-year-old, who scored 20 in South Africa’s first innings in the ongoing first Test, picked up the injury on the fourth finger of his left hand on Day 2 while fielding. While he continued to stay on the field, scans revealed he requires a surgery, which means he is ruled out for at least six weeks.

"Aiden sustained a fracture affecting the distal joint of his left ring finger," Dr Shuaib Manjra, Cricket South Africa Chief Medical Officer, said.

"After consulting with a number of hand specialists yesterday, we arrived at a decision that the best outcome would be achieved through surgical reduction and fixation. This would mean him unfortunately missing the rest of the series against England. We feel for Aiden who worked extremely hard to come through his previous hand fracture sustained in India to be Test match ready."

Markram was considered a doubt for the England Test prior to the game after he fractured his wrist by "lashing out at a solid object" after his second innings dismissal in the second Test against India in Pune back in October. That not only resulted in him missing the third Test in Ranchi, but he also missed the Mzansi Super League.

South Africa scored 284 in the first innings of the Centurion Test courtesy of Quinton de Kock’s 95. A brilliant effort with the ball then allowed the Proteas to restrict the World Cup winners to a pantry 181, with Vernon Philander and Kagiso Rabada picking four and three wickets respectively.

There’s a lot of hype around South Africa’s young prodigy, Aiden Markram. Having led the under-19 team to a World Cup win in 2014 - the only South African captain to lift a World Cup, Markram was handed the ODI captaincy quite early into his career on a temporary basis. The experiment came apart dramatically and Markram’s limited-overs career derailed. In Tests, though, he has been a constant presence at the top.

Recently, he was ruled out of the final Test of the series against India at Ranchi and it could indeed be a blessing in disguise for both Markram and South Africa. While his overall numbers read as 1402 runs in 19 Tests at an average of 40.05, a deeper dig shows that most of Markram’s big runs had come early in his career.

In 2017, Markram averaged 95 with the bat in four innings, making two tons and one half-century. 2018 and 2019 have been average for the opening batter, averaging 33.6 and 31.8 with two tons and five half-centuries in all.

As South Africa look to save face in India, Markram might not be the ideal candidate to open. Had he been available ?and not punched a solid object ?Markram would almost certainly have opened given that South Africa don’t have any back-ups.

A year ago, Aiden Markram was thrust into a captaincy role for the ODI series against India. Still relatively inexperienced at the international level, Markram was brutally exposed as India thumped South Africa in the ODI series in their own backyard.

An under-19 World Cup winning captain, Markram was always earmarked as a future leader, but by handing him a role he wasn’t prepared for at the highest level, the Proteas shattered his confidence. Something else also played a role in his quick jolt to reality after a honeymoon period in international cricket ?his frailties against spin.

Super consistent at the domestic level, Markram was struggling to match his own form for South Africa and even if there were the odd sparks of brilliance like in the Test series against Australia last year, consistency deserted him. He was dropped from the ODI side a while back and needed an extraordinary run of form in the domestic One Day Cup to force his way into the World Cup team.

But in England, Markram disappointed again. This has been the tale of Markram’s career so far. Standout domestic performances overshadowed by inconsistent return in national colours.

As the India Test series beckons, Markram remains a key figure in South Africa’s plans. He is set to open the innings alongside Dean Elgar and was sent on a spin camp to India and later involved in the South Africa A matches against India A.

Markram was dismissed cheaply in either innings in the first unofficial Test for South Africa A at Trivandrum but made a spectacular 161 at Mysore in the following unofficial Test. What’s more heartening is that he was dismissed by pacers in all three innings and survived a potent spin attack that India A possess.

Markram, a tall batsman with a solid technique, was brutally exposed in the series against Sri Lanka in Sri Lanka, the only Test series he has played outside South Africa. He made scores of 0, 19, 7 and 14 on that tour and was dismissed by Rangana Herath all four times. In the ODIs, he continued his wretched form and made 0, 3 and 20 in the three matches he played ?this time worked over each time by Akila Dananjaya, the ball turning away from Markram on each occasion.

This has been an Achilles Heel for Markram, one of the most solid next-gen South African batsmen. On this India tour so far, he has encountered Jalaj Saxena, Kuldeep Yadav and Shahbaz Nadeem, all high-quality left-arm spinners. However, he has countered them with much more confidence than before.

In the warm-up game against Board President’s XI, Markram retired hurt after making a 100 at a strike rate greater than 80 on day two. The opener is certainly in a fine frame of mind ahead of the Test series. In Ravindra Jadeja, he has a potent threat awaiting him, but Markram seems to be ready for the big challenge ahead.

Aiden Markram hit an unbeaten 67 to put South Africa in a dominant position before floodlight failure ended the fifth and final one-day international against Sri Lanka at Newlands on Saturday.

South Africa won by 41 runs according to the Duckworth/Lewis/Stern method when no further play was possible. The hosts were on 135 for two after 28 overs in reply to Sri Lanka’s 225 all out.

The win clinched a 5-0 series clean sweep for South Africa, continuing a horror run for the tourists. It was their fourth whitewash defeat in a five-match series in less than two years.

Markram was the night's big winner. Left out of South Africa's one-day team for the first eight matches this year, he was recalled for the final two matches of the Sri Lanka series on the back of outstanding form in domestic games. Saturday's innings seems certain to ensure that he is part of South Africa's squad for the Cricket World Cup later this year. He was named man of the match.

It was another poor performance by Sri Lanka despite a half-century by Kusal Mendis, who made 56, and an adventurous partnership of 61 off 53 balls between Priyamal Perera and Isuru Udana.

Sri Lanka fell three balls short of batting out a full 50 overs, continuing a sequence going back to October 2018. The only time in their most recent eight matches when they were not bowled out was in the rain-shortened third match of the current series when they were well short of the required run rate when play was halted.

Mendis played a measured innings in making his second half-century of a series in which none of his fellow top-order batsmen reached the 50 mark. He was needlessly run out after a mix-up with Priyamal Perera in the 35th over at a time when he could reasonably have been expected to start accelerating. He faced 84 balls and hit three fours.

- Rare De Kock failure -

Udana, the only other Sri Lankan to hit a half-century in the series, again made a lively tail-end contribution, hitting 32 off 29 balls before he and Priyamal Perera fell off successive deliveries from Kagiso Rabada in the penultimate over. Rabada finished with three for 50.

Leg-spinner Imran Tahir, in his final one-day international in South Africa, took two for 33, while fast bowler Anrich Nortje took two for 35.

Sri Lanka made a good start in the field when South African opening batsman Quinton de Kock flicked Sri Lankan captain Lasith Malinga to deep square leg after scoring six. It was the first failure of the series for De Kock and ended a sequence of five successive scores of 50 or more by the left-hander.

Markram survived two sharp chances, Udana lunging to his right but failing to hold a return catch when the batsman was on two, and on 13 when a diving Oshada Fernando could not hold a difficult chance in the covers off the same bowler.

But Markram batted with authority in sharing half-century stands with captain Faf du Plessis and Rassie van der Dussen before the umpires decided the light was not good enough for play to continue.

Despite being a key player in South Africa's Test team, Markram had failed to cement a place in the one-day side. He made 66 on debut against Bangladesh in 2017 but Saturday's innings was his first half-century in 17 innings since then.

Aiden Markram was handed a likely lifeline to the Cricket World Cup on Monday when he was named in South Africa’s squad for the final two one-day internationals against Sri Lanka.

Gianluigi Guercia / AFP

Markram, a fixture as an opening batsman in South Africa’s Test team, has not played in a one-day international since November 2018.

A modest one-day international record has counted against Markram but successive innings of 169, 139 and 85 for the Titans domestic franchise this month earned him a recall for South Africa's last two one-day matches before the World Cup, starting in May.

Also back is the experienced JP Duminy, who returned to domestic action with two half-centuries this month after being out of action since October following shoulder surgery. Duminy adds balance to the squad as a left-handed batsman and capable off-spin bowler.

Another experienced returning player is batsman Hashim Amla.

A squad of 15 players was named ?the same number as will go to the World Cup. Batsman Reeza Hendricks and all-rounder Wiaan Mulder were dropped.

South Africa lead the five-match series against Sri Lanka 3-0.

South Africa: Faf du Plessis (captain), Hashim Amla, Quinton de Kock (wkt), JP Duminy, Imran Tahir, Aiden Markram, David Miller, Lungi Ngidi, Anrich Nortje, Andile Phehlukwayo, Dwaine Pretorius, Kagiso Rabada, Tabraiz Shamsi, Dale Steyn, Rassie van der Dussen.

Remaining fixtures:

March 13, Port Elizabeth

March 16, Cape Tow
