The India vs Afghanistan T20 rivalry has gained prominence in the last few years.

India and Afghanistan clashed for the first time in an international cricket match during a 2010 T20 World Cup group match in Gros Islet, Saint Lucia.

Under the leadership of MS Dhoni, India won the toss and opted to field. The Men in Blue rode on Ashish Nehra’s 3/19 and Praveen Kumar’s 2/14 to restrict Afghanistan to 115/8.

Later, Murali Vijay (48) and Yuvraj Singh (23 not out) helped India successfully chase down the target in 14.5 overs to secure a comprehensive seven-wicket win.

Two years later, both sides were once again clubbed in Group A in the 2012 T20 World Cup in Sri Lanka. The MS Dhoni-led India won the fixture by 23 runs in Colombo.

Overall, India and Afghanistan have faced each other eight times in T20 international cricket.

The Men in Blue have dominated Afghanistan in cricket’s shortest format, winning six of the eight matches so far. One game was tied while the other ended in no result.

Highest total

The Indian cricket team holds the record for the highest total in India vs Afghanistan T20 internationals. Led by captain KL Rahul, India posted 212/2 in their 20 overs against Afghanistan in an Asia Cup Super Four clash in Dubai in September 2022. Put in to bat, India rode on Virat Kohli’s unbeaten 122 off just 61 balls and KL Rahul’s 41-ball 62 to post a huge total on the board. India later restricted Afghanistan to 111/8 in their allotted overs to register a 101-run victory. 

Lowest total

The Afghanistan cricket team registered the lowest total in India vs Afghanistan T20 history in the same game. During the Asia Cup 2022 Super Four encounter, Afghanistan could only manage 111/8 in their 20 overs in reply to India’s 212/2. Chasing a massive target, Afghanistan lost wickets at regular intervals as they later fell short by 101 runs. Ibrahim Zadran top-scored for Afghanistan with 64 not out. Most runs

Virat Kohli holds the record for the most runs in India vs Afghanistan T20 internationals. Between 2012 and 2024, Virat Kohli has scored 201 runs in five T20I matches against Afghanistan at an average of 67 and a strike rate of 171.79. He has slammed one century and one fifty against Afghanistan in T20 international cricket. For Afghanistan, Mohammad Nabi has the most runs in this T20I fixture. Mohammad Nabi has amassed 163 runs in seven T20Is against India at a strike rate of 135.83.

Most wickets

India’s Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Ravichandran Ashwin, Arshdeep Singh and Afghanistan’s Fareed Ahmad currently share the record for the most wickets in this T20 fixture. While Bhuvneshwar Kumar has bagged five wickets in a solitary T20I against Afghanistan, Ravichandran Ashwin picked five wickets in three matches while Arshdeep has taken five scalps in four games against the same opposition. Fareed Ahmad, on the other hand, bagged five wickets in three T20I games against India.

Highest individual score

Virat Kohli has registered the highest individual score in India vs Afghanistan T20 history. Opening the batting, Virat Kohli smashed an unbeaten 122 off just 61 balls against Afghanistan in an Asia Cup Super Four encounter in September 2022. Kohli’s scintillating knock was laced with 12 fours and six maximums to power India to 212/2 in their 20 overs. In reply, Afghanistan scored 111/8 as India won the game by 101 runs.

Best bowling figures

Bhuvneshwar Kumar recorded the best bowling figures in India vs Afghanistan T20 internationals. Right-arm pacer Bhuvneshwar Kumar registered match-winning figures of 5/4 against Afghanistan in an Asia Cup clash in 2022. Defending 212, Bhuvneshwar  dismissed Hazratullah Zazai, Rahmanullah Gurbaz, Karim Janat, Najibullah Zadran and Azmatullah Omarzai to help restrict Afghanistan to 111/8 in their 20 overs. Bhuvneshwar’s brilliant spell guided India to a 101-victory in Dubai.

Highest partnership

Rohit Sharma and Rinku Singh hold the record for the highest partnership in India vs Afghanistan T20Is. Reeling at 22/4, Rohit Sharma and Rinku Singh stitched an unbeaten 190-run partnership for the fifth wicket against Afghanistan in the final T20I of a three-match series in Bengaluru. Rohit Sharma scored 121 not out while Rinku Singh remained unbeaten on 69 not out to help India to post 212/4 in their 20 overs. In reply, Afghanistan scored 212/6 in their allotted overs to take the match to a Super Over. India later won the game in the second Super Over to clinch the three-match series 3-0.

India’s Bhuvneshwar Kumar and Pakistan's Shaheen Shah Afridi share the record for the most wickets in first over for a bowler in T20 cricket. 

Having made his name as an opening swing bowler, right-arm fast bowler Bhuvneshwar Kumar has already bagged 46 wickets in the very first over of T20 matches.

Pakistan’s current T20 international captain Shaheen Shah Afridi is joint-first on the list for the most wickets in first overs for a bowler in T20 cricket. The lethal left-arm pacer has scalped 46 wickets in the first over of T20 games.

The likes of Mohammad Amir, Sohail Tanvir and David Willey are some of the other bowlers who have claimed the most wickets in first over in T20 cricket across both the domestic and international level. Get the top five list.

Bhuvneshwar Kumar | 46 wickets

Bhuvneshwar Kumar has been the most successful bowler in providing early strikes in the first over in T20 cricket. Since making his T20 debut in 2009, the Uttar Pradesh-born cricketer has bagged 46 wickets in the first over in cricket’s shortest format. Among full-member ICC nations, Bhuvneshwar is the bowler to have taken the most wickets (18) in first overs in T20Is. Apart from representing the Indian cricket team and Uttar Pradesh in the domestic circuit, Bhuvneshwar has played for Bangalore, Pune and Hyderabad in the Indian T20 League.

Shaheen Afridi | 46 wickets

Shaheen Afridi has the joint wickets in first over for a bowler in T20 cricket. Known to trouble the batters with his lethal pace bowling, Shaheen Afridi has scalped 46 wickets in the first over in T20 cricket so far. In his short career, Afridi has also donned the jerseys of several T20 franchises including Lahore Qalandars, Comilla Victorians, Welsh Fire and Desert Vipers to name a few. Following his success in the T20I format, he replaced Babar Azam as Pakistan’s new T20I captain. He has taken 13 wickets for Pakistan in his opening overs in T20Is. 

Mohammad Amir | 41 wickets

Another Pakistan left-arm fast bowler, Mohammad Amir, is third on the list. Having made his T20 debut in 2008, Amir has picked up 41 wickets in the opening over in the shortest format. Amir finished as one of Pakistan’s leading wicket-takers in T20I format. Additionally, the experienced pacer played for numerous franchises across the globe. Bangla Tigers, Barbados Royals, Chittagong Vikings, Desert Vipers, Fortune Barishal, Galle Gladiators, Jamaica Tallawahs, Karachi Kings, Khulna Tigers and Quetta Gladiators are some of the teams that Amir has represented so far.

Sohail Tanvir | 39 wickets

Just like Shaheen Afridi and Mohammed Amir, another former Pakistan left-arm pacer Sohail Tanvir features next on the list. Having tormented the batters with his unorthodox left arm bowling action, Sohail Tanvir took 39 wickets in the first over in T20 cricket. Along with a successful T20I career for the national side, Tanvir spearheaded bowling attacks for several franchises including Guyana Amazon Warriors, Kandy Tuskers, Karachi Kings, Multan Sultans, Quetta Gladiators, Team Rajasthan, St Kitts and Nevis Patriots and St Lucia Zouks. His bowling played a key role in Rajasthan winning the inaugural Indian T20 League in 2008.

David Willey | 37 wickets

England’s David Willey completes the top five list. The talented left-arm pacer has been a wicket-taker for any side that he plays for in cricket’s shortest format. Since his T20 debut in 2009, Willey has scalped 37 wickets in the opening over of T20 matches. The bowling all-rounder has taken 15 wickets in his first overs for England so far. Having made his name as a T20 specialist, Willey has also donned jerseys of Abu Dhabi Knight Riders, Bangla Tigers, Team Chennai, Durban’s Super Giants, Multan Sultans, Perth Scorchers, Team Bangalore and Welsh Fire in the various T20 leagues.

Netherlands' Bas de Leede holds the unwanted record for registering the most expensive spell in ODI cricket. The Dutch all-rounder unwittingly created this record in the 24th match of the 2023 World Cup in India.

Up against an Australian team that won the toss and decided to bat first at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in Delhi, all the Dutch bowlers were on the receiving end of some punishment as David Warner and Glenn Maxwell, in particular, were in belligerent form and took the Netherlands' bowlers to the cleaners.

Among the Dutch bowlers, it was Bas de Leede who suffered the most as he finished 10-0-115-2 - which is the most expensive spell in ODI history. Australia went on to post 399/8 on the scoreboard en route to an easy win.

Former Australia cricketer Mick Lewis recorded the second-most expensive bowling spell in ODI cricket. 

During the fifth one-day international between hosts South Africa and Australia in  Johannesburg in 2006, fast bowler Mick Lewis gave away 113 runs in his quota of 10 overs without taking a single wicket. Mick Lewis�?figures of 10-0-113-0 is the second-most expensive bowling spell in ODI cricket history.

Electing to bat first, Australia rode on captain Ricky Ponting’s 164 off just 105 balls and Michael Hussey’s 51-ball 81 to post a mammoth score of 434/4 in their allotted 50 overs. In reply, Herschelle Gibbs smashed 175 off just 111 balls and captain Graeme Smith scored 55-ball 90 to help the hosts chase down the total in 49.5 overs.

Following his miserable bowling spell, Lewis was dropped from the Australian squad and his central contract was also not renewed.

Pakistan fast bowler Wahab Riaz and Afghanistan leg-spinner Rashid Khan are third and fourth respectively on the list.

Wahab Riaz conceded 110 runs in his quota of 10 overs without picking a single wicket against England in an ODI in Nottingham in 2016. During the third ODI of Pakistan’s tour of England and Ireland, England rode on opener Alex Hales�?171-run knock off just 122 balls, followed by Jos Buttler’s unbeaten 90 off 51 balls to post 444/3 in their 50 overs. In response, Pakistan were bowled out for 275 as the hosts secured a massive 169-run victory.

Meanwhile, Rashid Khan also gave away 110 runs in his nine overs against England in Manchester in 2019. Rashid also failed to scalp a single wicket in his most expensive spell in ODI cricket.

England posted 397/6 in their 50 overs courtesy of captain Eoin Morgan’s 71-ball 148 and Joe Root’s 88 off 82 balls. In reply, Afghanistan could only manage to score 247/8 in their allotted 50 overs. England won the match by 150 runs.

Netherland leg-spinner Philippe Boissevain is fifth on the list of most expensive bowling spells in ODI cricket. 

Boissevain recorded figures of 10-0-108-0 against England in the first ODI of their three-match series in Amstelveen.

Phil Salt (122), Dawid Malan (125), wicket-keeper batter Jos Buttler’s unbeaten 70-ball 162 and Liam Livingstone’s 66 not out off just 22 balls powered England to 498/4 in their 50 overs, recording the highest total in ODI cricket history. In reply, the Netherlands were bowled out for 266 as the visitors secured a massive 232-run victory.

Meanwhile, Bhuvneshwar Kumar is the only Indian to feature in this list of most expensive spells in ODIs.

During the fifth ODI of South Africa’s tour of India, Bhuvneshwar conceded 106 runs in his quota of 10 overs. He, however, dismissed South Africa captain Ab de Villers in the match.

South Africa rode on centuries from Quinton de Kock (109), Faf du Plessis (133) and Ab de Villers (119) to post a mammoth score of 438/4 in their 50 overs. India were bundled out for just 224 as the visitors won the series 3-2. It was South Africa's first-ever bilateral series win in India.

Left-arm spinner Kuldeep Yadav became the fastest to 50 T20I wickets for India. 

Kuldeep reached the milestone in his 29th innings for India during the third international against West Indies at the Providence Stadium in Guyana in 2023.

The Uttar Pradesh-born cricketer registered impressive figures of 3/28 to help India beat West Indies by seven wickets in the third T20I of the five-match series.

Kuldeep broke Yuzvendra Chahal’s record to become the fastest to 50 T20I wickets for India. The leg-spinner took 34 innings to reach 50 T20I wickets.

Chahal has currently bagged 95 T20I wickets in 78 matches at an average of 24.44 and an economy of 8.11 for India

The Men in Blue’s star pacer Jasprit Bumrah is third on the list for fastest to 50 T20I wickets for India. The Indian bowling spearhead achieved the feat in 41 innings.

Bumrah has managed to pick up 70 T20I wickets in 60 matches at an average of 20.22 and an economy of 6.62 in his T20 international career so far.

Off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin and pacer Bhuvneshwar Kumar complete the top five list for fastest to 50 T20I wickets for India.

While Ashwin scalped 50 T20I wickets in 42 innings, Bhuvneshwar reached the milestone in 50 innings.

Between 2010 and 2022, Ashwin has claimed 72 T20I wickets in 65 matches. On the other hand, Bhuvneshwar has scalped 90 wickets in 87 T20I matches so far.

Overall, Botswana leg-spinner Dhruvkumar Maisuria holds the record for the fastest to 50 T20 wickets in international cricket. The talented spinner took just 22 matches to reach 50 T20I wickets.

Among full member ICC nations, Sri Lanka’s Ajantha Mendis was the quickest to 50 T20 wickets in international cricket.

After making his T20I debut against Zimbabwe, Mendis reached the incredible milestone in 26 matches during an ICC World T20 clash against Pakistan in 2012.

Spinner Yuzvendra Chahal holds the honour of having picked up the most T20I wickets for India.

Chahal has picked 91 T20I wickets in 75 matches at an average of 24.68 and an economy of 8.13. During England’s tour of India in 2017, Chahal registered his best bowling figures of 6/25 in the third T20I at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium.

The leg-spinner has two four-wicket hauls and one-five wicket haul in his T20I career so far.

Meanwhile, Bhuvneshwar Kumar has bagged 90 T20I wickets in 87 matches at an economy of 6.96 and an average of 23.10. 

The Uttar Pradesh-born cricketer has registered three four-wicket hauls and two five-wicket hauls in the shortest format.

Kumar’s best bowling figures of 5/4 came against Afghanistan in Asia Cup 2022.

India spinner Ravichandran Ashwin is third on the list for most T20I wickets for India. Ashwin has claimed 72 wickets in 65 T20I matches at an average of 23.22 and an impressive economy of 6.90.

The right-arm offbreak bowler's best bowling figures of 4/8 came against Sri Lanka in Visakhapatnam in 2016.

The duo of Jasprit Bumrah and Hardik Pandya complete the top five list.

While Bumrah has scalped 70 wickets in 60 T20Is at an economy of 6.62 and an average of 20.22, Pandya has picked 69 T20I wickets in 87 matches at an average of 26.43 and an economy of 8.14.

Bumrah’s best bowling figures in T20I format is 3/11, which was registered against Zimbabwe in Harare in 2016. On the other hand, Pandya claimed four wickets for 16 runs in his quota of four overs against New Zealand at Narendra Modi Stadium in February 2023. This is Pandya’s best bowling figures in the shortest format.

Bangladesh’s Shakib Al Hasan holds the record for most dot balls bowled in T20I cricket.

The spinner has bowled a record 922 dot balls in 106 innings while maintaining an economy rate of 6.82.

Shakib, who has the second-most wickets in T20I cricket history, is ahead of Tim Southee, who is second on this list for most dots bowled in T20 Internationals. The New Zealand pacer has bowled 907 dot balls in the 102 innings.

Southee has also bowled the second-highest number of dot balls inside powerplay overs in T20 Internationals with 434 dot balls in 80 innings where he bowled in the opening six overs of a 20-over game.

India's Bhuvneshwar Kumar is third on the list of most dot balls bowled in T20Is. The pacer has bowled 863 dot balls in 83 innings.

Furthermore, Bhuvneshwar is the first and only bowler to have bowled 500 dot balls inside powerplay overs. Speaking of most dots bowled in powerplay overs in a T20I fixture, Bhuvi (IND vs WI, 2014) was the second to register 16 dot balls in his spell during the first six overs of a 20-over game after South Africa’s Lonwabo Tsotsobe (PAK vs SA, 2013).

As far as most dot balls bowled in a T20I innings is concerned, Bhuvneshwar Kumar’s best performance with the ball came against UAE in 2016, where he bowled 20 dot balls. 

He shares the Indian record for most dot balls bowled in a T20I innings with Ravindra Jadeja, who bowled 20 dot deliveries against Sri Lanka in 2016.

Former Pakistan all-rounder Shahid Afridi follows Bhuvneshwar on this list. Afridi’s economy rate of 6.63 is the best among the top five bowlers who have bowled the most dot balls in T20I cricket. The spinner is fourth with 830 dot balls in 97 innings.

Lasith Malinga completes the top five list of bowlers with the most dot balls bowled in T20I cricket. The Sri Lankan legend bid adieu to cricket in 2021 and bowled 713 dot balls in 83 innings in his T20I career.

India will lock horns with arch-rivals Pakistan in their first Super 4 stage clash of the Asia Cup 2022 at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium on Sunday, September 4. The match will start at 7:30 PM Indian Standard Time (IST).

Both the sides previously squared off in their opening Group A match of Asia Cup 2022 where Rohit Sharma-led India beat Pakistan by five wickets in a thrilling encounter.

After India won the toss and elected to field, Bhuvneshwar Kumar’s four-wicket haul (4/26) and Hardik Pandya’s 3/25 helped the Men in Blue bowl out Pakistan for 147 in 19.5 overs.

Pakistan wicket-keeper Mohammad Rizwan top-scored for his side, managing 43 off 42 balls.

In reply, Hardik Pandya’s unbeaten 17-ball 33 along with contributions from Virat Kohli (35) and Ravindra Jadeja (35) powered India to a five-wicket win. The Indian cricket team chased down its target in 19.4 overs.

India later beat Hong Kong by 40 runs to secure four points from two matches in Group A and qualified for the Super 4 stage.

Pakistan, on the other hand, thrashed Hong Hong by 155 runs in a virtual knockout encounter to seal their place in the Super 4. With two points from as many games, Pakistan finished second on the Group A standings, two points behind table-toppers India.

Ahead of the marquee Super 4 clash, India have suffered a massive blow as star all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja has been ruled out of the ongoing Asia Cup due to a knee injury. Stand-by player Axar Patel has been drafted into the squad as a like-for-like replacement.

India coach Rahul Dravid and the team management will have to decide whether to play Deepak Hooda or Axar Patel in the playing XI in place of Jadeja. In-form Hardik Pandya will return to the starting XI after being rested against Hong Kong.

Meanwhile, Pakistan will miss the services of fast bowler Shahnawaz Dahani due to a side strain. Pacer Hasan Ali is expected to replace Dahani in the playing XI.

After completing a 3-0 clean sweep in the ODI format, the Indian cricket team will square off against West Indies in the first of a five-match T20I series at the Brian Lara Cricket Academy in Trinidad and Tobago on Friday, July 29. The match will start at 8:00 PM IST.

Led by white-ball captain Rohit Sharma, India will look to continue their dominance over West Indies after whitewashing the hosts in the three-match ODI series. 

The Men in Blue have been in impressive form in the T20I format, winning four of their last five matches.

On the other hand, Nicholas Pooran will look to bounce back in the five T20Is after suffering an ODI series defeat against India on home soil.

The Caribbean side has also showcased inconsistent form in the shortest format, registering two wins, and two losses while one match was abandoned in their last five T20s.

For the wicket-keeper spot, West Indies captain Nicholas Pooran pips India’s Rishabh Pant. Besides fulfilling his wicket-keeping responsibilities, Pooran has played some impressive knocks recently in the T20I format. The Trinidad and Tobago-born cricketer has scored 1,301 runs in 60 T20Is at a strike rate of 130.88 and has nine fifties to his name. Pooran can be a great pick for the opening T20I at 9.5 credits.

Bhuvneshwar Kumar currently holds the record for the most T20I wickets in powerplay overs. 

In T20 cricket, the first six overs of an innings are the powerplay overs, where only two fielders are allowed outside the 30-yard circle. Bowlers have the most difficulty during these six overs as batters usually score the majority of their runs with the help of fours and sixes.

However, there have been a few bowlers who have excelled in not only containing the flow of runs in the powerplay overs but also picked up plenty of wickets.

Bhuvneshwar Kumar's dismissal of opposing captain Andrew Balbirnie in the first Ireland vs India T20I saw him go past former West Indies bowler Samuel Badree and New Zealand star Tim Southee, who have 33 T20I wickets in the powerplay overs.

His 34 T20I wickets in 134 powerplay overs have come in 62 innings, at an economy rate of 5.53.

While Trinidad and Tobago-born leg-spinner Samuel Badree picked 33 T20I wickets in the 121 powerplay overs that he bowled in 50 innings, Kiwi fast bowler Tim Southee has bagged 33 wickets in 68 T20I innings, bowling a total of 129 powerplay overs.

Having made his T20I debut against New Zealand in 2012, Badree has scalped 56 wickets in the 52 T20I matches that he played.

On the other hand, Southee has claimed 111 T20I wickets in 92 matches since making his T20I debut against England in 2008.

Bangladesh star all-rounder Shakib Al Hasan features fourth on the list of most T20I wickets in powerplay overs. 

The left-arm spinner has picked 27 T20I wickets in the 83 powerplay overs that he has bowled in 58 innings. Having made his T20I debut against Zimbabwe in 2006, Shakib has claimed 119 T20I wickets in 96 matches that he has played so far.

Australia fast bowler Josh Hazlewood, Mustafizur Rahman of Bangladesh and Australia’s Mitchell Starc are next on the list with 26 T20I wickets each in the powerplay overs.

Hazlewood has bagged 26 wickets in 30 T20I innings, having bowled a total of 69 overs in the powerplay. On the other hand, Mustafizur has taken the same number of wickets in the 78 overs that he bowled in 56 innings. Starc has taken 51 inningsand 99 powerplay overs to reach the mark.

The Indian cricket team will take on hosts Ireland in the first T20I of the two-match series at the Malahide Cricket Club Ground in Dublin on Sunday, June 26. The match will start at 9:00 PM IST (Indian Standard Time).

India will miss the services of some of their star players including Virat Kohli, Jasprit Bumrah and Ravindra Jadeja, who are currently playing in the tour match against Leicestershire ahead of the rescheduled England-India fifth Test at Edgbaston starting July 1.

In the absence of India’s regular T20I captain Rohit Sharma, who has tested positive for COVID-19, India will be led by Hardik Pandya for the first time.
