Under head coach Roberto Martínez, Portugal have been in impressive form in the ongoing UEFA Nations 2024-25 and have already qualified for the quarter-finals.

Portugal will head into the game brimming with confidence after they thrashed Poland 5-1 at the Estadio do Dragao in Porto, Portugal.

Croatia’s Euro 2024 fortunes hang in the balance after a late injury-time equaliser by Italy in their final Group B match at Leipzig, robbed them of three valuable points. 

The Croats are currently third in Group B with two points from three games having lost their opening game to Spain and drawn their second against Albania.

Croatia are one of the top footballing nations in the world, especially Europe, and have excelled in recent times at major football tournaments. 

They reached the semi-finals in the last two editions of the FIFA World Cup, losing out to France in the final in 2018 and finishing third in 2022.

Croatia also reached the Round of 16 in the 2016 and 2021 editions of the Euro Championships. Furthemore, they finished as runners-up in the UEFA Nations League in 2023 after losing out to Spain in the final on penalties.

However, Croatia find themselves on a slippery slope in Euro 2024 as they face a group-stage exit for the first time in the continental championship since 2012. Is Croatia out of Euro 2024? Let’s find it out.

While Croatia still have bleak chances of making it to the round of 16 stage in Euro 2024, it’s worth noting that they need plenty of other results to go their way and make it as one of the four best third-placed from the Euro 2024 group stage.

The 24 participating nations are divided into six groups with four teams in each group. All teams will play three matches each in the group stage. 

After the group engagements, the top two teams from each group progress to the knockouts making it 12 out of 16 teams. 

The remaining four places will be taken by the best third-placed teams with respect to points. 

If they have the same points, then the team with a better goal difference will proceed. Goal difference is nothing but the difference between the goals scored by a team against the goals conceded by them.

Currently, Hungary from Group A have three points, one more than Croatia, and are placed third in their respective group. 

Austria in Group D and Slovakia in Group E are also placed third in their respective groups with three points and both have a match remaining as well. 

Hence, Austria and Slovakia or the team that finishes third in their respective groups, will make it to the Round of 16 ahead of Croatia, even if they face defeat in their final round fixtures. Hungary is also ahead of Croatia in the race for the round of 16.

For Croatia to be in the round of 16 reckoning, they need to finish ahead of the prospective third-placed teams in Group C and F. 

And for that to happen, either Denmark or Slovenia in Group C has to lose by a margin of three or more goals to be on level terms with Croatia, who have a goal difference of -3. 

Both Denmark and Slovenia are currently level on points with Croatia with a goal difference of 0. 

Denmark meet Serbia whereas Slovenia are up against England in the last round of matches. 

Coming to Group F, both the Czech Republic and Georgia need to lose their final-round matches as a draw will take them above Croatia.

Though Czech and Georgia have only a single point, a draw will make them level on points with Croatia with both their goal differences superior.

The Czech face second-placed Turkey while Georgia meet Euro 2016 champions Portugal in their final group games.

Though on paper, Croatia are still in the race, there are too many permutations and combinations that have to go their way to progress further. In the end, the heavy 0-3 loss to Spain in their tournament opener may weigh against them.

Croatia will lock horns with Spain in the UEFA Nations League 2023 final at the Stadion Feijenoord in Rotterdam, Netherlands. The match will kick off at 12:15 AM Indian Standard Time (IST) on Monday, June 19.

Under head coach Zlatko Dalić, Croatia secured their place in the final after beating hosts Netherlands 4-2 in their thrilling semi-final encounter.

Forward Donyell Malen opened the scoring for the Netherlands in the 34th minute before Croatia’s Andrej Kramarić equalised at the start of the second half. Later, Mario Pasalic put Croatia in front in the 72nd minute to inch closer to the summit clash. However, Dutch footballer Noa Lang scored in the 96th minute to take the match to an additional 30 minutes of play. 

Bruno Petkovic and captain Luka Modrić netted a goal each in extra time to help Croatia reach the UEFA Nations League 2023 final.

On the other hand, Spain defeated Italy 2-1 in the other semi-final to book their place in  back-to-back UEFA Nations League finals.

Led by new head coach Luis de la Fuente, Spain rode on Yeremy Pino’s early goal to take a 1-0 lead in the third minute of the semi-final.

The Roberto Mancini-coached Italy quickly bounced back after Ciro Immobile equalised from the penalty spot in the 11th minute.

After dominating possession for most of the game, Espanyol forward Joselu scored the match-winning goal for Spain in the 88th minute to guide La Roja to another UEFA Nations League final.

Spain will aim to clinch their first international silverware since winning the UEFA Euro Championship in 2012. They earlier lost to France 1-2 in the UEFA Nations League 2021 final.

Meanwhile, the Luka Modric-led Croatia will look to bag their first international trophy in the Netherlands. Croatia finished runners-up in the FIFA World Cup 2018 and were third in FIFA World Cup 2022.

It took La Roja until the very last group stage game to make their presence felt as the three-time Euro champions burst to life with a 5-0 win over Slovakia. Croatia, on the other hand, left it late too. After losing their opening game to England, they went on to play out a 1-1 draw against the Czech Republic before beating Scotland 3-1 in their final group stage match to finish second in Group D.

While both teams�?players haven’t always been at their best in the tournament so far, they will be aware that there’s absolutely no margin for error from here on. But history favours Spain ahead of the game as Croatia have been eliminated in all three of their previous knockout matches at the Euros.

"During the evening, the Croatian Football Association received the results of regular testing for the SARS-CoV-2 virus, which showed that national team member Ivan Perisic was positive for coronavirus," the Croatian Football Association said in an official statement. 

Furthermore, they are also set to miss experienced defender Dejan Lovren in the fixture as he remains suspended. Croatia have other issues too as there are three players who are on the brink of suspension. The likes of Marcelo Brozovic, Duje Caleta-Car and Mateo Kovacic will miss the next match if booked.

Spain do not have any injury issues whatsoever. Head coach Luis Enrique will take positives from their win over Slovakia, meaning that Cesar Azpilicueta might keep Marcos Llorente out of the starting line-up again. 

Like Croatia, Spain, too, have players who run the risk of suspension. If booked against Croatia, Jordi Alba, Sergio Busquets, Pau Torres and Rodri will miss the quarter-final clash should the Spaniards progress.
