The Australian pace attack soon wrapped up England’s second innings to register a 43-run win at the iconic venue. The Pat Cummins-led Australia earlier secured a thrilling two-wicket win over England at Edgbaston in the opening Test of Ashes 2023.

With Australia winning at Lord’s, there have been seven occasions when a team took a 2-0 lead in the five-match Ashes series since 2000.

Australia have achieved the feat on six instances, while England have recorded it only once in 2013.

During those occasions, none of the opposing teams even managed to level the five-match Ashes series 2-2.

Talking about Ashes in England, the ongoing series is the third instance when a team has taken a 2-0 lead since the turn of the century.

Under the tutelage of head coach Brendon McCullum, England needs a miracle to overturn the 2-0 deficit and win the ongoing 2023 Ashes. So, the biggest question in everyone’s mind right now is - has any team come from 2-0 down to win an Ashes series?

Only one team came from 2-0 down to win an Ashes series since the first edition in 1882-83.

Led by captain Don Bradman, the Australian cricket team achieved the rare feat during the 1936-37 Ashes series.

During the first Test of the 1936-37 Ashes series, England thrashed Australia by 322 runs in Brisbane to go 1-0 up in the five-match series.

The visitors continued their impressive form in the second Test as they hammered Australia by an innings and 22 runs at the Sydney Cricket Ground to take an unassailable 2-0 lead in the Ashes series.

However, the Don Bradman-led Australia accomplished the ultimate comeback in the remaining three Tests to win the 1936-37 Ashes series at home.

Australia beat England by 365 runs in the third Test in Melbourne, before registering a 148-run win in the fourth Test in Adelaide to level the series 2-2.

Heading into the final Test in Melbourne, Australia produced another scintillating performance to annihilate England by an innings and 200 runs to clinch the Ashes series 3-2 in March 1937.

The hosts won the series courtesy Don Bradman’s brilliance with the bat in the final three Tests. The legendary Australian batter played match-winning knocks of 270, 212 and 169 to help Australia stage a comeback for the ages.

Former England opening batter Leonard Hutton is the current record holder for the highest individual score in Ashes.

Widely regarded as one the greatest batters in the history of cricket, Leonard Hutton slammed 364 against arch-rivals Australia at The Oval during the fifth Test of the Ashes series in 1938.

Hutton surpassed legendary cricketer Don Bradman’s 334, which the Australian recorded during an Ashes series in Leeds in 1930.

Among active cricketers, Australia’s Steve Smith holds the record for the highest individual score in Ashes.

Leonard Hutton | 364 vs Australia, The Oval, 1938

Leonard Hutton etched his name in the history books after he recorded the highest individual score in Ashes in 1938. After trailing 1-0 in the five-match Ashes Test series against, England captain Wally Hammond won the toss and opted to bat in the final Test at The Oval. Having lost an early wicket, Leonard Hutton and Maurice Leyland stitched an incredible 382-run partnership for the second wicket. While Leyland departed for 187, Hutton continued his sensational innings to bring up a magnificent triple hundred. Hutton then broke Bradman's record Ashes score of 334, before he was dismissed for 364. Hutton’s innings included 35 fours and lasted for more than 13 hours, having faced 847 balls. It remains the most runs scored in a Test innings by an English player. Hutton’s innings helped England beat Australia by an innings and 579 runs to draw the five-match series 1-1.

Former Australia cricketer Don Bradman has the second-highest individual score in Ashes history. During the third Test of Australia’s tour of England in 1930, a young Don Bradman took his batsmanship to the next level as he hammered 334 off just 448 balls at Headingley in Leeds. Interestingly, he scored 309 of those runs in a day’s play and he remains the only Test player to do so. Bradman’s 334 became a world record as he overtook the previous highest of 325 scored by England cricketer Andy Sandham. Despite Bradman’s record knock, the Headingley Test ended in a draw due to inclement weather.

Former Australia captain Bob Simpson features third on the list for highest individual scores in Ashes. Electing to bat first in the fourth Test of the 1964 Ashes series in Manchester, Bob Simpson played a knock for the ages as he converted his maiden Test ton to a triple hundred. The right-handed batter scored 311 to power Australia to a mammoth total of 656/8d. Having faced 743 balls during his 13-hour innings, Simpson slammed 23 fours and one six to record his highest individual score in Test cricket. He also became just the second Australian after Don Bradman to score a triple century in England. Simpson’s batting effort ensured the match ended in a draw and Australia retained the Ashes courtesy their 1-0 lead in the five-match series.

Former Australia cricketer Sir Don Bradman currently holds the record for scoring the most runs in Ashes history.

The legendary batsman made his Ashes debut in the 1928 Test in Brisbane and went on to amass 5,028 runs in 37 Ashes Tests at an average of 89.78. Having played in 62 Ashes Tests between 1928 and 1948, Bradman also has the most centuries in Ashes history (19).

Regarded as one of the greatest batters of all-time, Don Bradman has the highest average (99.94) by a Test batsman. He was also the first cricketer to score a triple hundred in the Ashes in 1930 and remains the only Australian to do it twice after repeating the feat in 1934.

Second on the list is Sir Jack Hobbs. The former England batsman played 41 Tests against Australia and scored a half-century in his debut Ashes inning in 1908 at Melbourne. Hobbs remains the only cricketer besides Don Bradman to hit 3,500-plus runs, with his record reading 3,636 runs in 41 matches.

Allan Border, the most successful Ashes captain, and Steve Waugh are third and fourth on this list.

Border, who led Australia to their maiden ODI World Cup title, racked up 3,222 runs in 42 matches while Waugh, the most successful Test captain in history, amassed 3,173 runs in 45 Tests.

Steve Smith, who made his Test debut in 2010, has been England’s tormentor-in-chief in the 21st century. The former Australian captain has accumulated 3066 runs in 33 Ashes Test.

Having made his Test debut against England in Brisbane in November 1928, Bradman ended his legendary career with 31 fifty-plus scores in Ashes history. He registered 19 centuries - which is the most number of hundreds in Ashes. Apart from 19 tons, Bradman slammed 12 fifties in Ashes history.

Widely acknowledged as the greatest batter of all time, Bradman also holds the record for the most runs in Ashes. The right-handed batter amassed 5,028 runs in 37 Ashes Tests at an impressive average of 89.78.

Bradman was also the first cricketer to smash a triple hundred in the Ashes. He scored 334 at the Headingley Cricket Ground in Leeds, England. Interestingly, the Australian great scored 309 of those runs in one day’s play, and remains the only Test cricketer to do so.

The prolific England batter scored 3,636 runs in 41 Ashes Tests at an average of 54.26.

Former Australia captain Allan Border is third on the list. The left-hander registered 26 fifty-plus scores in Ashes history.

Having made his Ashes debut in 1978, Border finished his illustrious Test career with seven hundreds and 19 fifties in the series history. He accumulated 3,222 runs in 42 Ashes Tests at an average of 42.59.

England’s Herbert Sutcliffe and Steve Waugh complete the top five list for most fifty-plus scores in Ashes history.

Both Herbert Sutcliffe and Steve Waugh recorded 24 fifty-plus scores in Ashes history.

Between 1924 and 1934, Sutcliffe scored 2,741 runs in 27 Ashes Tests with eight hundreds and 16 fifties to his name.

On the other hand, Waugh amassed 3,173 runs in 45 Ashes Tests. He hit 10 tons and 14 half-centuries in Ashes between 1986 and 2003.

Among active cricketers, Australia’s Steve Smith has the most fifty-plus scores in Ashes.

The Australian talisman has registered 22 fifty-plus scores in Ashes, including smashing 11 hundreds and 11 fifties. The right-handed batter has scored 3,044 runs in 32 Ashes Tests so far.
