Every sport has its legends, like football with Lionel Messi and Pelé or basketball with Michael Jordan and LeBron James. Cricket has multiple players throughout its illustrious history who could be considered some of its greatest representatives.

Some names pop up in the cricket world, and you can always rely on them to be considered some of the greatest. Die-hard cricket fans would label a player like this the ‘Godfather of Cricket?due to their significant impact on the sport and their profound influence on fans. Do you want to know the best candidates? Get to know more about them, but learn first the criteria!

How does one become the Godfather of Cricket?

The term ‘Godfather?is a special title in cricket as it signifies that a specific player had a monumental impact on the sport. It’s not outright the best player in cricket’s history, but the Godfather should be an all-time great who made an impact only matched by a small group of players who could also be candidates for the tag.

Here are some factors that could be considered when deciding a cricketer’s impact:

  • Cultural influence - For a player to be crowned as a Godfather, they should have a strong impact on the sport’s culture. They should be icons due to their exceptional talent, making them a big influence in their countries and worldwide. A cricket Godfather should be well-known worldwide, not only to their country’s cricket fan base. They should be recognised whenever on screen, or their name at least invokes a reaction from the fans.
  • A strong legacy as a cricketer - At its core, the Godfather tag should be given to players who have the talent to be called superstars. The player should have achieved notable statistics, success, and a lasting impact on cricket history.
  • A pioneer of the sport - To be a Godfather, one must have made a significant impact on the sport. They must be a pioneer or someone who transformed the sport because of their impact.

The best candidates for the Godfather of Cricket

Don Bradman (Australia)

Donald Bradman is an immortal name in cricket history, largely due to his unparalleled test batting average of 99.94. He set tremendous records that are hard to believe today, which made him the golden standard of cricket during his time as a star player.

Bradman was a big deal in Australia as he became a cultural symbol. The country saw him as something to believe in, as they got through the Great Depression and the post-war times. He was also crucial in growing the sport worldwide with his performances at the Ashes against England, and his influential batting technique.

Viv Richards (West Indies)

If you want a cricket player who brings flair and a defiant attitude to the sport, look no further than Sir Viv Richards. He redefined what it meant to be a top cricketer in the modern age, as he cemented the West Indies as a powerhouse in the sport.

Richards was scoring plenty of runs, but he made it fun. He did it with swagger, which was enticing to the young fans of the sport. His fearless batting made him an icon and the symbol of pride in the Caribbean. Richards was also a leader who dominated cricket for over a decade, and his attacking influence remains today.

MS Dhoni (India)

Mahendra Singh (MS) Dhoni is known for being one of India’s top stars. His exceptional leadership helped India win the first-ever T20 World Cup in 2007 and led his country to win the 2011 ODI World Cup.

Dhoni was always a calm player, earning him the moniker ‘Captain Cool? which was a fantastic name for him as it described him well. Dhoni had a great attitude that people admired because he was always quietly focused on his tasks. With that focus on the matches, he put in some key performances as a wicketkeeper and batsman.

He mentored a new generation of Indian players, and he is a big reason why the country is such a powerhouse in the sport. With his humble approach to the sport, the younger generation felt they could be like him. His influence on the younger players has led to another golden generation of talented cricketers in India and other countries.

Jacques Kallis (South Africa)

While he often gets overlooked, Jacques Kallis is an underrated Godfather of the sport. He has over 10,000 runs and 290 wickets across Test and ODI cricket. Kallis is arguably the greatest all-rounder cricket has ever seen, which is common now, but only a few can do it at a high level like Kallis.

During his career, Kallis was always the focus of the opponents?scouting report. Former England captain Michael Vaughan was always wary of playing against Kallis because everyone knew the South African player would always make an impact as a batsman or a bowler.

He was a big reason behind South Africa’s success with batting, and he did that while serving as a frontline seamer. The influence might often be understated by casual cricket fans, but true cricket fans know how much Kallis deserves all the love he is getting.

Cricket will keep getting new Godfather candidates

Across the sport of cricket, multiple nations have produced legends. Most cricketing countries will bring out top-tier players again, who could become bigger legends than those who precede them.

In most sports, some players are good enough to have long-lasting legacies. They could be famous beyond their careers because they were impactful and influential enough to be remembered by multiple generations. All the cricketers mentioned here are potential Godfathers of the sport, and their names deserve to be etched into history.

Being captain isn’t simply about setting the field or calling heads or tails. Captains need to understand their teammates and adjust to different situations. Their decisions affect team mood, tactics, and results. For fans, the question of who's the best captain is always a fun yet heated debate. Here's a look at the top leaders who’ve best stood out on the field:

The mark of a good captain: What skills lead to greatness?

Great captaincy requires handling pressures that fans rarely notice. For instance, modern leaders must deal with media scrutiny and guide their teams through changes after retirement.

They also need to balance their roles between franchise and national duties. Their job goes well beyond the boundary rope, where calm judgment, communication, and a long-term vision show their value.

Here are the things that make a great cricket captain:

Win/loss ratios

A captain’s win/loss record gives a quick look at how well they’ve done. However, the full story is more than simple numbers. Winning often with a strong team can make the record look better than it is.

On the other hand, leading a weak or new team can hurt the record, even if the captain does a good job. Doing well under pressure, despite the odds, is a true mark of greatness that no numbers can measure.

Strength of opposition

Wins against weaker teams can make the numbers look nice, but they don’t tell much. It’s the tough, close games against strong sides that test a captain. These games show if a captain can stay calm and think fast. Playing well against the best teams shows real skill. Even if the team doesn’t always win, the captain earns respect.

Team progression

A great captain helps the team get better than before. This can show in higher rankings, a stronger bench, or a clearer playstyle. Even when the team is rebuilding, good leaders prepare for future wins. Real progress often comes from work done off the field, not only from what happens during the game.

Tactical decisions

Picking different bowlers or changing the batting order can win or lose matches. Great captains watch the game closely and change plans as things happen. They notice when the game swings or how the pitch is playing.

Using both feeling and planning, they can beat teams with better players. While some choices are easy, the brave and well-timed ones show real skill.

Player development

Captains help young players get better and support the experienced ones. A good leader makes a safe space where players can learn from mistakes and grow.

Trust and encouragement help players find their place in the team. Giving players real jobs can change their careers. Many top players say they did well because a captain believed in them early.

Versatility

Being a captain today means leading in Tests, ODIs, and T20s. Each game is different and needs a different direction. Changing from slow and steady play to fast and risky is not easy. Captains who can change their style for each game, place, and player’s need should be flexible. These captains often keep their teams strong for a long time.

The finest captains under the spotlight

Today’s top cricket teams owe much of their success to strong leaders. India, England, and Australia have improved because their captains bring the team together. Watching these captains shows how important they are for keeping and growing the best teams in cricket.

Here are the top cricket captains today:

Virat Kohli (India)

Virat Kohli led India’s Test team with bold captaincy and great batting. He scored 7,000 Test runs in only 138 innings, among the fastest in cricket history. Kohli played well in other countries and built a strong and tough team. His leadership changed Indian cricket by mixing a strong fighting spirit with helping young players.

Pat Cummins (Australia)

Pat Cummins stands out as Australia’s calm and smart captain. He has helped the team win major trophies while excelling as a bowler. Cummins is one of the fastest to take 150 Test wickets. He recorded one of the best bowling performances by an Australian captain with 6/23.

Kane Williamson (New Zealand)

Kane Williamson is renowned for his tactical genius and calmness under pressure. He leads New Zealand with quiet confidence, fostering a strong team spirit.

Over his career, he ranks among New Zealand’s most experienced leaders, having captained in nearly 100 ODIs. Williamson has also scored centuries in both innings of a Test match, demonstrating remarkable skill and steady focus.

Ben Stokes (England)

Ben Stokes leads England’s ‘Bazball?style with bold and fearless play, transforming Test cricket through brave decisions and innovative tactics. As captain, he supports attacking play and taking risks instead of following old ways. His biggest record includes hitting the most sixes in Test history at 133. It shows the fast-paced style he brings, mixing fun with strong drive.

MS Dhoni (India)

MS Dhoni turned the Chennai team into a winning machine with ice-cold choices and strong trust in his players. He stayed calm even in tough moments and changed how people see captaincy. His top record includes the most stumpings in international cricket at 195. It pays tribute to his quick reflexes behind the stumps in high-stakes games.

Rohit Sharma (India)

Rohit Sharma shocked Indian cricket in 2023 with smart field moves and a calm mind. He is known for having the highest score in an innings in ODI history at 264 runs. He also has a total of 637 sixes in 499 international matches. These records show his timing, control, and focus. He changed power-hitting by mixing strength with smooth, clean shots.

Stats vs strategy: Which bears more weight?

While numbers show how a captain does, they aren't enough to show a leader's value. There are things that numbers can't measure, like wit, morale, and the inspiration they bring to the team.

In T20 cricket, where data is used a lot, leaders still need feeling and heart. As new stars change the field, the question of who's the best captain remains an ever-changing debate.

Chennai opened the 2025 Indian cricket league with a matchup against fierce rivals Mumbai. As the star player, Rachin Ravindra delivered by leading them to a four-wicket win to kick off the Indian cricket league campaign.

While Ravindra was mostly focused on the game, he did not ignore the pressure of playing alongside a legend like MS Dhoni. It was a win blanketed by honour, but the crowd wanted Dhoni to hit the winning runs.

Ravindra knows the weight of the win

Whenever Dhoni was on the pitch, fans wanted to see him contribute to the game. Ravindra is honoured to be his teammate in Chennai. ‘It's cool to share the crease with him for the first time. He's a legend of the game, and people love him here. So it's special,?Ravindra stated.

He’s focused on leading Chennai to the win despite the spotlight and crowd’s attention on Dhoni. Ravindra said, ‘All the crowd would have been hoping that I gave him [the strike] and finished the game, and he would have finished it. But it's just about getting the job done?

T20 is the shortest among the three formats in international cricket. As a result, it moves at a faster pace compared to Test cricket and One-Day Internationals.

Though at its entertaining best, T20s require teams to think and move faster to be on top of things. As a result, the captain will always have to stay ahead of the game and marshall his troops effectively as the game can easily move away in a matter of a few balls.

This is why the skipper’s decision-making becomes very crucial in such stages. Add to that the pressure of playing for the country and shouldering the burden of millions of fans, and it’s safe to say that captaincy is always a thankless job.

The captains will have to be ready with backup options in case the existing ones don't come off. From field placements to bowling changes, executing the strategies discussed with the team management to finishing the overs in time, the leader has to be adept at handling different situations simultaneously.

Though individual performances do play a role in winning matches, at the end of the day it is the captain and the collective that is responsible for the decisions and the outcome of the game.

With that in mind, we glance through the list of the most successful captains for India in T20Is.

Virat Kohli currently holds the record for the most runs for India in T20 World Cup history.

The swashbuckling batter has amassed 1,292 runs in 35 matches at an impressive average of 58.72 and a strike rate of 128.81. Kohli has registered 15 half-centuries - the most fifties by an Indian in the T20 World Cup.

Interestingly, Kohli scored his maiden T20 World Cup fifty (39-ball 50) in his very first match of the marquee ICC T20 tournament against Afghanistan in Colombo in 2012.

Indian cricket team captain Rohit Sharma features second on the list of most runs for India in T20 World Cup history. Having made his T20I debut against England during the inaugural edition of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup in South Africa back in 2007, Rohit Sharma has scored 1,220 runs in 47 matches at an average of 34.85 and a strike rate of 133.04. Between 2007 and 2024, the Indian cricket team captain has scored 12 fifties in the T20 World Cup.

Rohit’s highest score in the showpiece event came against Australia in St. Lucia in 2024 when he smashed 92 off just 41 balls. The right-handed batter’s incredible innings set the stage for India's win in the knockout stage to reach the Semi-Finals.

Flamboyant left-handed batter Yuvraj Singh is third on the list of most runs for India in T20 World Cups. The stylish southpaw has scored 593 runs in 31 matches at a strike rate of 128.91 and an average of 23.72.

Team India has had a topsy-turvy ride in the T20 World Cup since its inception in 2007. Led by MS Dhoni, the Indian cricket team won the title in the inaugural edition but has failed to recapture the title since. India came close in the 2014 edition but were outperformed by Sri Lanka in the final.

Rohit Sharma, the Indian captain for the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2022, has featured in all eight editions of the tournament and has also made the most appearances for India at the T20 World Cup, featuring in 47 games. He is also second on the list of top run-getters for India in the T20 World Cup

Rohit claimed the top spot after playing in India’s thrilling victory over Ireland in their first match of the ICC Men's T20 World Cup 2024. He also broke the record for the overall most appearances in the T20 World Cup, previously held by Tillakaratne Dilshan, who made 35 appearances. The Indian captain broke Dilshan's record against South Africa in Perth on October 30, 2022.

Virat Kohli, the top run-getter in T20 World Cup history, has featured in 35 matches. Kohli has been an ever-present in the team since 2012 and led the Indian team in the 2021 edition. He surpassed Dhoni's record of 33 appearances during the T20 World Cup 2024 Semi-Final match against England.

MS Dhoni previously held the record for most appearances for India in the T20 World Cup. Dhoni featured in 33 matches between 2007 and 2016, scoring 529 runs at an average of 35.26.

Yuvraj Singh is fourth on the list, having played 31 matches in the T20 World Cup for the Indian team. The stylish all-rounder smashed 593 runs and scalped 12 wickets in six editions of the tournament.

Ravindra Jadeja, who missed the ticket for the T20 World Cup 2022 due to an injury, is fifth on the list. Jadeja featured in every edition between 2009 and 2024 and picked 22 wickets in 30 games. Know cricketers who has played most matches for India in T20 World Cup history.

Meanwhile, Suresh Raina is the sixth-most capped player for India in the T20 World Cup with 26 games. He scored the first century by an Indian player in the tournament, vs South Africa in 2010 and remains the only Indian player to achieve the feat to date.

Following Raina is the off-spinning all-rounder, Ravichandran Ashwin. He is the leading wicket-taker for India in the T20 World Cup and has played 24 matches.

Since the inception of T20 cricket, the game has witnessed dramatic changes.

Batters are expected to score at an explosive strike rate to make the most of the 120 deliveries bowled in a T20 innings.

With the massive pressure put on the cricketers, there are times when cricketers don’t perform at their best and produce an underwhelming performance in a T20 match.

Even some of the legendary cricketers have experienced an off day and succumbed to the pitch conditions.

With that said, let’s have a look at the few slowest T20 knocks by Indians.

Slowest T20 knocks by Indians

MS Dhoni - 9 off 27 balls vs Australia, SR 33.33, 2008

MS Dhoni registered an unwanted record during the only T20I of India’s tour of Australia in 2008. Electing to bat first, the Indians batters struggled at the iconic Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG). The visitors were reduced to 20/4 in 3.2 overs. Later, captain MS Dhoni walked out to bat to resurrect India’s innings. India soon lost one wicket as Dhoni tried to steadied the innings. He scored just nine runs off 27 balls at a strike rate of 33.33 before he fell to David Hussey. India were later bundled out for 74 in just 17.3 overs. In reply, Australia chased the required target in 11.2 overs to win the game by nine wickets.

MS Dhoni - 5 off 12 balls vs South Africa, SR 41.66, 2009

MS Dhoni once again features in the list for the slowest T20 knock by an Indian. Chasing 131, India were reeling at 3/56 against South Africa before MS Dhoni came into bat during an ICC World Twenty20 clash in Nottingham in 2009. Just like other Indian batters, MS Dhoni struggled to get going as he scored just five runs off 12 balls at a strike rate of 41.66. He later departed after an unfortunate run-out. Following Dhoni’s dismissal, India continued to struggle as they could only manage 118/8 in their 20 overs.

MS Dhoni - 11 off 23 balls vs West Indies, SR 47.82, 2009

The MS Dhoni-led Indian cricket team produced another lacklustre performance against West Indies during a group match in the ICC World Twenty20 at Lord’s in 2009. Opting to bat first, India lost their first three wickets for just 29 runs in 4.2 overs. Dhoni later joined Yuvraj Singh at the crease. While Yuvraj scored runs at one end, Dhoni looked out of sorts as he scored just 11 runs off 23 balls at a strike rate of 47.82. Dhoni later perished to Dwayne Bravo in the 13th overs. Later, Yuvraj’s 67 off 43 balls helped India post 153/7 in their 20 overs. In reply, West Indies successfully chased down the target in 18.4 overs to secure a comprehensive seven-wicket win.

Yuvraj Singh - 11 off 21 balls vs Sri Lanka, SR 52.38, 2014

One of the limited-overs legends, Yuvraj Singh, also features in the list for the slowest T20 knock by an Indian. During the ICC World T20 final against Sri Lanka in 2014, Yuvraj Singh played a knock that he would never want to be reminded of. Put into bat, India lost openers Ajinkya Rahane and Rohit Sharma with the score reading 64/2 in 10.3 overs. Yuvraj later walked out to bat with Virat Kohli at the other end. The southpaw struggled against both pacers and spinners in Mirpur. Yuvraj managed just 11 runs off 21 balls at a strike rate of 52.38 as India posted a below-par total of 130/4. Sri Lanka later chased down the target in 17.5 overs to win the T20 World Cup by six wickets.

India’s Hardik Pandya has been a successful captain in white-ball cricket in the limited opportunities that have been presented to him.

With Rohit Sharma being in the twilight of his international career, India has been grooming quite a few candidates to be the Indian cricket team’s next captain.

As a result, Hardik Pandya has already been named vice-captain of India’s white-ball squads.

Apart from his leadership credentials, Pandya is also a valuable asset to any cricket team with his hard-hitting batting and his right-arm pace bowling. He is a match-winner on his day in limited-overs cricket.

Meanwhile, the star Indian all-rounder has also captained Team Gujarat and Team Mumbai in the Indian T20 League.

With that in mind, let’s have a look at Hardik Pandya captaincy record.

Hardik Pandya captaincy record

Hardik Pandya made his captaincy debut against Ireland during a two-match T20 international series in Ireland in June 2022.

Under his leadership, the Indian cricket team won the first T20I by seven wickets before registering a nail-biting four-run victory in the second game to clinch the series 2-0.

Since then, Pandya has led India in 16 T20Is and three ODI matches so far. He is yet to captain India in Test cricket.

Under Pandya’s captaincy, the Indian cricket team has won 10 of the 16 T20Is while suffering five losses and the other game ended in a tie.

In ODI cricket, the Men in Blue have won two of the three matches under Pandya.

The Gujarat-born cricketer is only the fourth Indian captain to have led the Men in Blue in at least 15 T20Is.

MS Dhoni (72 matches), Rohit Sharma (54 matches) and Virat Kohli (50 matches) are the other captains to have led India in more matches in cricket’s shortest format. Among these four, Pandya has the second-best win percentage of 62.5% in T20I cricket.

Hardik Pandya captaincy record in Indian T20 League

Hardik Pandya was appointed the captain of Team Gujarat after he was roped in by the franchise at the Indian T20 League 2022 mega auction.

The decision turned out to be an instant hit as Pandya led Gujarat to their maiden Indian T20 League title in 2022. The star all-rounder also became the first captain after legendary Shane Warne to lead a franchise to the title in its first year in the Indian T20 League.

In 2023, Pandya continued to impress as a leader as he guided Team Gujarat to back-to-back Indian T20 League finals. However, Gujarat fell short in the 2023 final as they lost to MS Dhoni-led Team Chennai by five wickets (DLS method).

In the two seasons as Team Gujarat captain, Pandya established himself as a successful captain. Gujarat won 22 of the 31 matches while suffering nine losses under Pandya. He registered an impressive win percentage of 70.97%.

Pandya later returned to Team Mumbai after two seasons ahead of Indian T20 League 2024. He replaced Rohit Sharma as Mumbai’s new captain.

The controversial decision received widespread disappointment from fans as Pandya was booed heavily at various stadiums.

Furthermore, Team Mumbai started their Indian T20 League 2024 campaign on a disappointing note as they lost their first three matches. They later bounced back with consecutive wins.

Under Pandya, Mumbai have currently won just three of their eight matches in the 2024 edition of the Indian T20 League.

Hence, Pandya can be considered as one of the prime candidates to replace Rohit Sharma as India’s limited-overs captain in the near future.
