A winner in stoppage time by youngster Bidyananda Singh helped Mumbai City clinch all three points in a tense against Jamshedpur FC at a packed Mumbai Sports Arena. In a game in which both teams had many chances, it was the hosts?resolve and commitment that helped them stage a heroic second half comeback to strengthen their grip on fourth place.

Here are the main talking points from this thrilling Indian Super League game.

Controversy galore

The referees were at the thick of things in the first quarter of the game, with Mumbai City being docked a goal for offside and Jamshedpur given a slightly contentious penalty. With the first corner of the goal, Mumbai mounted a strong case for themselves, as the ball found its way to forward Amine Chermiti who slotted home from close range, but the goal was disallowed for offside.

Minutes later, Jamshedpur broke quickly on the counter and their forward hit the ground on feeling the slightest of contacts, and the referee had no hesitation to point to the spot. Noe Acosta duly obliged from the spot to give Jamshedpur the lead, leaving many in the Mumbai camp frustrated at the award of the penalty in the first place.

Resolute fightback

Despite being a goal down, the Islanders never lost belief as they had the bulk of the possession in the game and created the best chances. Their tenacity was finally rewarded in the 60th minute, when a corner from the right was struck perfectly by Chermiti, and found the back of the net off the crossbar.

Mumbai City’s wingers Raynier Fernandes and Diego Carlos were a constant thorn for the opposition, dribbling past players with their quick feet and firing in crosses at will. The Islanders were wasteful of a lot of their chances, but fortunately that didn’t end up hurting them as youngster Bidyananda Singh neatly struck a looping ball to find the corner of the net in stoppage time and give his side a well deserved win.

Captain Amrinder to the rescue

Pritam Chaudhari and Mato Grgic were a formidable unit in defence for the Islanders, forcing Jamshedpur players to try their luck from distance. However, as the game remained deadlocked, Mumbai committed more players forward, leaving them exposed on the counter. One such counter could proved decisive, as a cross from the left was headed in goalwards from point blank range, but Amrinder Singh made a brilliant diving save to ensure the game remained at one apiece.

His save reinstated that winning belief amongst the Islanders, and they finally managed to nick one on the counter to get a deserved 2-1 victory. Mumbai City are now five points ahead of Chennaiyin FC, looking favourites to make it to the semifinals with only two group games left now.

A hard-fought 1-0 win over NorthEast United at home has firmly put Jorge Costa’s Mumbai City FC back in contention of making it to the playoffs of the Indian Super League. As things stand, the Islanders sit fourth in the tally with 23 points, while Chenniyin FC ?on the back of their four consecutive wins ?sit fifth with 21 points with a game still in hand.

Mumbai’s road to the playoffs ?especially from this point on ?isn’t a walk in the park, to say the least, as they face Jamshedpur FC, FC Goa and Chennaiyin FC in their final three games. For now, the team needs to concentrate more on the Jamshedpur game given that they have lost all of their last three away games. Their form, in fact, has deteriorated to an extent that they have only won one of their last five games.

For Mumbai though, an upsurge in form especially at home has been a blessing of late. They have not only won their last two home games, but have also kept clean sheets in both of them.

Will home form be a factor?

It took Mumbai City FC as many as three months to register their first win at home this season when they narrowly defeated Hyderabad FC back in December. Since then, they have won three of their last four fixtures, with the only defeat coming against a strong ATK unit.

Since their 4-2 loss to FC Goa in early November, Mumbai have played five games at the Mumbai Football Arena and have only conceded four goals,  keeping two clean sheets during the tenure. As we speak of clean sheets, Costa’s men went without conceding against a strong Bengaluru FC side followed by resilient NorthEast unit.

Before this, they had only managed two clean sheets in their opening 12 games. Contrast!

Stable defence

Mumbai’s defence, in the last few games, has been a force to reckon with given the fact that Bengaluru and NorthEast United only managed 1 shot on target each. And a part reason for a stability as this is Costa’s tactical shift to a 4-2-3-1 approach from his usual 4-3-3.

Following a crushing 2-0 defeat against Odisha in early January, Costa moved to playing a 4-2-3-1 and since then, they have only conceded one goal. To put things in perspective, they conceded 21 goals in their first 12 games while playing in a 4-3-3 approach. Since their switch to the new formation, they have allowed 10 shots/match against them. Before that, opponents were averaging 13.33 shots/match against them.

Away form a worry for Jamshedpur:

Jamshedpur, who have won their last two encounters at Mumbai Football Arena, are without a win in their last three away games; all defeats. For a team that won two of their opening three away games of the season, this form remains a cause of concern.

A win against Bengaluru FC at home has put Mumbai City FC back into the hunt of getting the semi-final berth of the Indian Super League. With only three points separating them from the fourth-placed Odisha FC ?having a game in hand- they now face a rather easy test against the bottom-placed Hyderabad FC at G. M. C. Balayogi Athletic Stadium on Friday.

Having enjoyed an impressive six-game unbeaten run in the season, Jorge Costa’s men slumped to two back-to-back defeats ?against ATK and Odisha FC ?but a stern comeback against the defending champions last week was a testament of their strong character. Now with just a handful of games to play, there is no margin for error.

The Islanders not only need three points to get on level terms with Odisha FC, but also need to up their goal difference (-2) if they are to get an upper hand in the point tally. However, given the run of form their striker Modou Sougou has enjoyed of late, this fixture remains a perfect opportunity.

Sougou ?a man in form

Former Marseille striker Sougou experienced an unfortunate drought after failing to score in his first seven games of the season. The fortunes, however, turned for the better as he went on to score three in his last four appearances, with two of those coming against Hyderabad in a 2-1 win at home. The third came in a recent win over Bengaluru FC.

It’s not only about goals though, as the Senegalese has been very tactical of late by getting into more dangerous position and having more shots on goals. He took 6 shots in the 2 games against Odisha and ATK FC. A detailed comparison between his first seven games and his last four depicts a perfect picture.

It was, in fact, against Hyderabad that he scored his first goal of the season and took five shots in that match, out of which 4 were on target. His form will be crucial for Mumbai against a Hyderabad defense which has leaked most number of goals 31 goals in 13 matches (2.38 goals/match).

Where to strike Hyderabad?

Hyderabad FC have seen vague pattern this season. Out of their 31 goals conceded, they have conceded 10 goals (32.22%) in the 31-45?minute period this season. They have, in fact, conceded 10 goals in their last three outings and 6 of them came in the last 15 minutes of the half.

Apart from that, a similar specimen follows them in the final 15 minutes. With eight goals (conceded in the final 15 minutes), Hyderabad have conceded the highest number of the goals by a team in the league. At the same time though, they have a knack of putting the ball into the net. The 76-90?period is Hyderabad’s favourite period of the match to score, having netted seven of their 13 goals in that period (53.84%).

Hyderabad are without a clean sheet this season and if the trend continues, they will hold the record of fewest clean sheets kept in a season, currently held by ATK (one clean sheet) during the 2015 edition of the Indian Super League.

Mumbai - a force to reckon with away from home

Prior to their defeat against Odisha FC, Mumbai City FC were unbeaten away from home. Regardless of their defeat though, they still have the best away record in the league; most points, most wins and fewest defeats.

Their opponents, on the other hand, carry a contrary record at home, as they have won just a solitary game in their seven home outings. No team has won fewer matches at home in this season. They have also conceded 11 goals in their 7 matches, which is the second highest amount of goals conceded by a team at home.

First half goals from talismanic imports Modou Sougou and Amine Chermiti helped Mumbai City FC get a cherished home win over the champions Bengaluru FC in the Indian Super League. The result also means that the Islanders managed to do the double over the Sunil Chhetri led franchise, bumping them up to fifth place in the league.

Having lost their previous two games against Odisha FC and ATK respectively, Jorge Costa’s were visibly low on confidence as the visitors dominated the early exchanges. Mumbai however were very organised and compact in their defence, restricting Bengaluru to a few long range shots. The skipper and Ashique Kuruniyan had a couple of shots from distance, but they failed to really test Amrinder Singh.

Lucky breaks for Mumbai City

The Islanders got a helping hand from the visitors for both of their goals, with a couple of defensive mistakes aiding them to get back to winning ways. For a first goal, a long pass over the defence from Rowllin Borges seemed destined to fall into the arms of the Bengaluru keeper, but Gurprit Singh Sandhu misjudged the flight of the ball which in turn allowed Sougou to head it into an unmanned net.

For the second goal, it was Borges who once again caused panic in the opposition defence. A looping through ball’s trajectory was well spotted by a Bengaluru defender, but a misguided header meant that the ball fell kindly to an unmarked Chermiti, who unabashedly slotted home from close range to give Mumbai City a two goal cushion.

Apart from that, Mumbai City also were on the right end of two astute refereeing decisions, as the visitors had two of their goals docked for offside.

The win means that Bengaluru City are still searching for their first win over a Jorge Costa managed Mumbai City, with the islanders enjoying the better of this rivalry. The Mumbai-Bengaluru clashes have also become feisty, with tensions flaring in this game and one can expect the rest of the ISL season to be similarly fiery as the battle for a qualifier spot intensifies.

Two back-to-back defeats for Mumbai City FC in the Indian Super League means that there is no margin for error for Jorge Costa from this point. The route to the play-offs, however, isn’t an easy one, as they now cross paths with the defending champions, Bengaluru FC at home ?a venue where they haven’t really asserted any authority as of this season.

A win against Hyderabad FC in match week 10 remains Mumbai’s solitary victory at home, and given Bengaluru’s recent run of form, Costa needs to come up with a top-notch plan to arrest their slide. The Blues, having won two games on the trot, carry an exemplary record both home and away this season. They are, in fact, the only side who have conceded less than 10 goals this season (7).

As far as their away form is concerned, they have only conceded three goals as of now, which is the lowest in the league.

The two teams played an absolute spectacle the last time they met, with Rowllin Borges?94th minute goal proving out to be the winner for the Islanders. The tables, however, might turn given the fact that captain Sunil Chhetri has found his scoring boots.

Chhetri, a big concern for Mumbai City FC

Chhetri, who scored an 89th minute penalty against Mumbai in December, has scored five goals in his last five appearances and will look to add more to his tally on Friday. As for Bengaluru, regardless of their supreme defensive structure, they have failed to find the net in their away trips this season, having notched just 5 goals away from home (third lowest in the league).

It is safe to say that The Blues are extremely reliant on their captain for scoring goals, but the fact remains that the likes of Dimas Delgado and Ashique Kuruniyan have found their feet at the right time, which too remains a concern for the home team.

Mumbai will want to improve their home record

The Islanders provide a boost to the away team because they have only picked four points in their five home fixtures this season, which is the lowest by any team. They are, in fact, one among two teams who haven’t kept a clean sheet at home this season along with NorthEast United FC.

Furthermore, out of the 21 goals Mumbai have conceded this season, 12 have come at home, meaning almost 57% of the goals have been conceded at home, which is the joint 2nd worst in terms of proportion of goals conceded at home. That coupled with the fact that they allow their opponent an average of 14.60 shots/match on average is another worry to take note of.

Mumbai haven’t scored a goal in last two games and it is about time their strikers take charge.

Aridane Santana and Xisco Hernandez came back to haunt Mumbai City FC in the Indian Super League as Josep Gombau’s masterclass led Odisha FC to a league double ?a 2-0 win this time - over the Islanders.

Odisha, having arrived on the back of a 2-0 win over Chennaiyin FC on Monday, registered their fourth win in five games, and with this, moved fourth in the league tally, while Mumbai slipped a place to sit fifth.

Gombau’s tactics were plain and simple; stretch the game, deliver high balls into the area and exploit Mumbai City FC’s frailty. Such was their dominance on the night that they won two corners inside the opening five minutes.

In threatening Mumbai’s defence, a certain Jerry Mawihmingthanga played a huge role. The 22-year-old, who scored one and assisted two the last time these two sides met, attempted four crosses on the night, and Mumbai had no answers to his deliveries.

The deadlock was broken by none other than Aridane Santana, who was left unmarked into the area, and the Spanish forward made no mistake in driving his side into the lead. The 32-year-old then returned the favour in the 74th minute as his national compatriot, Xisco sealed the game with a neat finish.

Mumbai, on their part, hardly created any major opportunity and thus came to an end their perfect record away from home.

Defence failed to read the threat

Known for troubling their opponents with an immaculate wing play, Odisha FC had scored 53% of their goals through crosses before the fixture and Mumbai should have read the danger early in the game. However, as they failed to grasp the momentum, the likes of Narayan Das (eight crosses), Jerry and Xisco (four crosses each) started threatening by stretching the game out wide.

A defeat means Mumbai’s defence has been breached on 21 occasions, only Hyderabad FC have conceded more goals this season. Meanwhile, a goal and an assist on the night means Xisco has now contributed in seven goals in his last 11 outings for Odisha, which includes two goals and an assist against Mumbai alone.

No sync in attack

Mumbai’s defence was duly at fault in Kalinga Stadium, but it was their attacking line that failed to deliver anything positive. With Serge Kevyn, Amine Chermiti and Modou Sougou all starting in front, Mumbai were expected to give Odisha a run for their money. Contrary to that, the trio attempted a mere five shots on goal between them, with only one being on target.

The closest Mumbai actually came to scoring was in the 44th minute when Sougou swung in a right-footed drive, but his shot sailed wide, and that was it. Chermiti, who happens to be Mumbai’s top scorer this season with four goals, is without a goal in his last five appearances and has attempted just one shot in his last four games. Sougou, on his part, has only scored in one out of the 10 games he has been a part of.

Up next for Mumbai is a firm test against the defending champions, Bengaluru FC at Mumbai Football Arena on Friday.

Mumbai City FC’s six-game unbeaten run in the Indian Super League (ISL) came to an abrupt end as Roy Krishna-led ATK ran out 2-0 victorious at Mumbai Football Arena on Saturday. The Islanders, who entered the game on the back of a four-game unbeaten run against ATK, started off on a bright tone, sending in some back-to-back crosses into the area, but the accuracy was what they were lacking.

Both Mumbai and ATK had played an absolute spectacle earlier in the season when two goals in the added minutes from either team shared the stakes. The story, this time around though, was completely contrary, with ATK dominating once they got into the groove.

The deadlock was broken by the visitors a minute before the half-hour mark when midfielder Pronay Haldar put the ball into the net after striker David Williams did well to get the better of Mumbai’s defence. As the game approached the break, ATK doubled their lead, and this time it was substitute Michael Soosairaj, who scored an absolute curling belter from the edge of the area.

It was the same story altogether in the second period, and although Mumbai moved a gear, it just wasn’t enough to salvage anything positive from the game.

What went wrong for Mumbai

ATK are known to play free-flowing football and often catch their opponents with surprise through balls. The two-time champions, in fact, have scored most goals with through balls (8) than any other team in the ISL, and Mumbai simply seemed unaware of the fact. Once into their self, ATK started threatening not just low balls, but also sent in some serious aerial through.

A defence, which was without Sarthak Golui, struggled not just in possession, but also failed to keep up with the pace ATK were threatening. Once Mumbai were left chasing, ATK made sure there is no way up from that.

As for the home team, Modou Sougou seemed promising at times and an early chance did come his way, but lack of power means he was unable to test Arindam Bhattacharya between the sticks. The brightest who shone in Mumbai’s colours was Mohamed Larbi. The Tunisian, who remains a constant fixture in Jorge Costa’s plan this season, was part of every attack Mumbai built on the night. Left, right, centre, the Tunisian was everywhere on the field. But as the game progressed, his effect faded in thin air.

ATK ended the night with six shots on target ?a similar figure to Mumbai’s. Mumbai, on paper, were the superior team all ends up; more shots, better possession, more passes with better accuracy, but at the end of the day, the clinical edge which ATK topped was always lacking.

Sougou, who scored a hat-trick against ATK last season, did put the ball into the net a couple of times into the second period, but for once, the referee waved his flag on and the second time it was a clear foul on Bhattacharya.

To sum up, nothing worked in favour of the home team on the night.

A roaring Mumbai Football Arena was abuzz on Sunday night when Mumbai City FC played host to Hyderabad FC. Given the visitor’s poor track record away from home this season, it was anyway supposed to be a rather easy route for the home side, who now sit fourth in the Indian Super League tally.

Jorge Costa, who won his first home game of the season on Sunday, made a whopping four changes to the team which faced Jamshedpur FC on Thursday. With their midfield general Paulo Machado out injured, Sourav Das made it to the starting XI while Amine Chermiti ?Mumbai’s top scorer this season ?was replaced by Serge Kevyn upfront.

But despite missing all the big names on the night, Mumbai made a promising start to the game with Modou Sougou breaking the deadlock in as early as the sixth minute. A setback, however, was on card when Sarthak Golui was shown his second yellow after the hour’s mark, but that didn’t faze the home side a bit, as they went on to score their second some 10-odd minutes after the incident.

As for Hyderabad, they did pull one back inside the final 10 minutes, but that was just too little too late for the team.

On a night when Sougou scored a brace, Raynier Fernandes as well as Mato Grgic proved out to be the orchestrators, as it was their vital contribution which surged Mumbai to an emphatic victory.

Raynier ?A smart presence over the field

Mumbai were bound to miss Machado against Hyderabad. Given the flare and extra dimension the Portuguese provides in every aspect of the game, it was Raynier’s turn to take the centre-stage. The local hero, whose name echoed around the ground every time he was on the ball, was heart and soul of all of Mumbai’s attacks on the night and despite being dominated in terms of possession, he ended his tenure with 41 touches and 29 passes. The 23-year-old was majorly tasked to do the dirty work and he returned with a figure of six tackles, two interceptions and as many crucial blocks.

Grgic standing tall

With Mumbai down to 10-men, there was still time for Hyderabad to walk away with all three points. Costa, on his part, deemed particular about his substitutions. The Portuguese introduced three defensive players, but had it not been for Grgic, Mumbai would have left wondering what went wrong.

The second period belonged to Hyderabad all ends up, but Grgic made sure nothing goes past Amrinder Singh. The Croatian, in fact, completed his game with a whopping 11 clearances, four blocks and one interception. A commanding general of Mumbai’s defence, the 32-year-old stood tall in helping Mumbai getting the deserved three points.

Unbeaten in their last five games, Jorge Costa’s Mumbai City FC are on a roll in this season’s Indian Super League. Beating the defending champions, Bengaluru FC away from home was no slouch and the Islanders showed why they shouldn’t be taken for granted in the subsequent fixture when the likes of Paulo Machado and Raynier Fernandes guided the team to a 2-1 victory against an in-form Jamshedpur FC; again, away from home.

Up next for Costa and his team lies a rather easy test ?a home game against the bottom-placed Hyderabad FC, who are the only team yet to take a point in four away matches. But will it really be that easy? Stats say otherwise.

A worrying home record

Mumbai’s recent form sure gives them confidence heading into the game, but the fact remains that they are the only team yet to win a home match in the ongoing season. They, in fact, have lost five of their last six home games. The Islanders, as of now, acquire the fifth spot in the league tally with 13 points in nine games and they have only secured one point from their three home matches.

The contrast in their record away from home is exhilarating, to say the least. In their six away games, they are unbeaten with 3 wins and 3 draws. The key element in their form has been the number of goals they have conceded both home and away. After nine games, Mumbai have conceded 3 goals/match in their home matches compared to the 1.17 goals/match in away matches.

Only only NorthEast United who have played 2 more matches have conceded more goals at home than Mumbai.

What helps Costa against Sunday’s opponent is the fact that Hyderabad doesn’t ooze any confidence either. They have conceded 13 goals (3.25/match) and have scored 4 goals (1/match) in their last four away matches.

Goal scoring not a worry for Mumbai

Striker Amine Chermiti has shouldered Mumbai’s goal-scoring duties this season, scoring four goals so far, but Costa will be happy about the contribution the other outfield players have made in the process. The team has as many as 12 different goal scorers this season, which is most by any team in the league this season. Furthermore, with four goals, no team’s defenders have scored more goals this year than Mumbai City FC’s defenders. FC Goa sit on level terms with the Islanders in the context.

Mumbai’s goalscorers this season: Amine Chermiti (4), Paulo Machado (1), Sauvik Chakrabarti (1), Mohamed Larbi (1), Pratik Chaudhari (1), Rowllin Borges (1), Subhasish Bose (1), Bipin Singh (1), Sarthak Golui (1), Diego Carlos (1), Raynier Fernandes (1), Serge Kevyn (1).

The Indian Super League completed its eighth week and it saw a multitude of goals, 22 to be exact, and a number of them were headed in off set-pieces or pinpoint crosses.

Wingers seemed to find their groove, delivering excellent balls onto the head of their strikers, who promptly put them away mostly. However, there were some shots from distance which found the back of the net, and one other which was the result of wonderful observation.

Let us have a look at three of them in gameweek eight.

CK VINEETH

Club: Jamshedpur FC

Against: Kerala Blasters FC

It was an emotional moment for CK Vineeth when he scored for Jamshedpur against his former hometown club. He could not bring himself to celebrate, hiding his face when he put the ball in the back of the net. But that does not take away the quality of the goal he scored.

Cutting in from the left-wing, Vineeth quickly laid it off to Farukh Choudhary, who found him with a superb ball over the centre-backs. Vineeth took it in his stride and found the only gap in the near post, side-footing the ball home past Rehenesh in the Kerala goal.

PAULO MACHADO

Club: Mumbai City FC

Against: Jamshedpur FC

Jamshedpur were part of two brilliant goals in the week, though on the wrong end of it. The first of them was scored by Portuguese midfielder, Paulo Machado.

The Mumbai City captain took a free-kick on the left-wing, almost near the corner flag. Any sane player would have attempted a cross and hopes it finds a head in the box but Machado went for goal from the acute angle.

He curled it in beautifully with good pace, beating the first defender and getting it towards the corner of the net. It was helped in by the keeper but one can argue it was always destined to end up in the back of the net.

RAYNIER FERNANDES

Club: Mumbai City FC

Against: Jamshedpur FC

Mumbai are currently on a six-match unbeaten streak and they have Raynier Fernandes to thank for that, whose thunderous shot secured all three points for the Islanders.

Skipper Machado was instrumental in the move again. He played a brilliant, Firmino-esque no-look forward pass to Pape Modou Sougou who in turn laid it off for the incoming Raynier.

With one swing of the boot, the midfielder unleashed the ball towards the right corner of the net and the pace and curl gave Subrata Pal no chance to parry or save it.
