One of the most exciting parts of limited-overs cricket for fans and pundits is the Super Over, which tests a player’s resolve under intense pressure to win their team the match.

A Super Over takes place during tight finishes in limited-over encounters that end in ties. Should both teams finish with an identical total after the completion of their innings, a Super Over is used to decide the winner of the contest.

During Super Overs both teams get to play an additional six balls or an over to score as many runs as possible in them.

Each team nominates three batters to bat the Super Over and the team that scores the most runs in the additional six balls wins the contest.

It’s also worth noting that a team may not get the opportunity to play the full six deliveries if they lose two wickets.

Should both teams score the same amount of runs at the end of a Super Over, the match will be considered to be a tie during league stage encounters of a tournament.

However, in case of a tie in the Super Over in knockout or bilateral series matches, the Super Overs will recur until a winner is determined.

Here, we have a look at those games that saw teams score the most runs in a super over.

Netherlands vs West Indies, 2023 | 30/0

The Netherlands holds the record for most runs in a super over. They did so against West Indies during match 18 of the ICC World Cup qualifiers 2023 at Harare. In what was a high-scoring ODI encounter, West Indies had posted 374/6 on the scoreboard thanks to a Nicholas Pooran century and fifties from Brandon King and Johnson Charles. In reply, Netherlands finished on 374/9 with the help of a Teja Nidamanuru century and a Scott Edwards fifty. As a result, the game went into a Super Over, where Logan van Beek hit three fours and just as many sixes to score 30 runs - the most ever in a one-over eliminator. West Indies could just manage 8/2 in their Super Over as the Netherlands won the game in thrilling fashion.

West Indies women are second on the list for most runs in a super over. They did so against the South Africa women in the second game of a four-match ODI series in 2022. Set a target of 161 to chase by South Africa, West Indies were all out for 160 after 37.4 overs as the game ended in a tie and had to be decided via Super Over. In the one-over eliminator, Deandra Dottin and Hayley Matthews combined to help the Windies to 25 for no loss. South Africa managed 17/1 in their Super Over as the West Indies won the contest.

West Indies vs New Zealand, 2008 | 25/1

Prior to being on the receiving end of Logan van Beek’s Super Over heroics in 2023, West Indies held the record for most runs in a super over in the men’s game. In the first game of a two-match T20I series against New Zealand, West Indies could only manage to score 155/8 as they looked to chase a target of 156. With the score for both teams tied, the match went into a Super Over which saw Chris Gayle hit Daniel Vettori for 25 runs. New Zealand managed 15/2 in their Super Over as West Indies won the contest.

India women cricket team will play a T20I tri-series against South Africa women cricket team and West Indies women cricket team, beginning on January 19. All the matches of this series will be played at Buffalo Park, East London.

The tri-series will take place in a double round-robin format, with all teams facing each other twice. The teams that finish in the top two spots will play in the final on February 2.

India, who contested in the final of the previous Women’s T20 World Cup against Australia, will bank on their explosive batters Smriti Mandhana and Harmanpreet Kaur for the runs. Opener Shafali Verma is participating in the Women’s U19 World Cup and Yastika Bhatia is likely to open alongside Mandhana.

West Indies all-rounder Stafanie Taylor returns to the team after the Caribbean cricketer was injured during the ODI series against New Zealand in September 2022. Windies fast bowlers Shamilia Connell and Shakera Selman also recovered from injuries and will be taking part in the tri-series.

For the hosts South Africa, Dan van Niekerk misses out having failed to clear a physical assessment test. They will be led by Sune Luus and have roped in two uncapped players in Annerie Dercksen and wicketkeeper Tebogo Macheke for this series.

South Africa will also be hosting the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup 2023 beginning on February 10 and both the visiting teams will look to acclimatize to the conditions through this tri-series.

South Africa women take on West Indies women in match 23 of the ICC Women’s World Cup 2022 at Basin Reserve in Wellington on Thursday, March 24. The match will begin from 3:30 AM IST.

South Africa women suffered their first defeat of the ICC Women’s World Cup 2022 campaign against Australia last time around, and will look to return to winning ways on Thursday. The Sune Luus-led side, second in the standings with eight points, need a win against West Indies women to confirm a top-four finish and qualification to the semis.

West Indies, on the other hand, suffered an eight-wicket defeat against Pakistan and are sweating over their chances of qualifying for the semi-finals. A loss for the Stafanie Taylor-led side on Wednesday could see West Indies exit the competition.
