The consequences of the global pandemic had little to no effect on the Premier League club’s spending ahead of the 2020-21 season. While Chelsea ended up splashing over £200m on new signings, the likes of Manchester City and Leeds United weren’t behind.

However, money never guarantees success and these spendings have also had mixed results so far. While there have been players like Tomas Soucek, Ollie Watkins and James Rodriguez, who have impressed one and all, there have been others who have failed to live up the hype.

Today, we take a look at five such players who have struggled to live up to the expectations.

Willian - Arsenal

Willian arrived at Arsenal amidst much fan-fare and the Brazilian put on a man-of-the-match performance on his PL debut for the Gunners as well, assisting two goals in a 3-0 win over Fulham. However, that has been his only notable contribution in an Arsenal shirt till date. Since then, he has only provided a solitary assist and has failed to score a single goal across four different competitions. What’s more worrisome is the fact that his conversion rate has deteriorated considerably as he averages1.3 shots per 90 minutes. Note that this is the same player who bagged 11 goals last season with Chelsea.

Kai Havertz - Chelsea

Kai Havertz became the most expensive player of the 2020 summer transfer window when Chelsea decided to pay £71million to Bayer Leverkusen for the 21-year-old. Coming at the back of a fantastic season in Bundesliga, where he had scored 18 goals and nine assists, fans and experts had expected a commanding display from the German but the youngster has not only failed to justify his price tag, but his ineffective displays have drawn extreme criticism as well. So far, the 21-year-old has scored four goals across four competitions and has provided as many assists.

Donny van de Beek - Manchester United

The signing of Donny van de Beek from Ajax was a smooth transition, to say the least, but many supporters and even the former players questioned why he was signed by Manchester United in the first place. Fast forward to the date and the 23-year-old still remains a deviant figure at the club. Regardless of the talent he brings, the title of being one of the worst transfers comes on the back of an extreme muddle as no one is still aware of his best position. Manager Ole Gunnar-Solksjaer has answered the questions regarding his absence in sheer professionalism, but the fact remains that he has started just two league games this season

Timo Werner - Chelsea

"At the beginning, I had this self-image that I can go on doing my thing here, but in the last few months, I have been brought down to earth. It's the way in England that you never have a quiet game,?striker Timo Werner recently made an honest admission about his time in the Premier League.

The German international, who bagged 34 goals and 13 assists for RB Leipzig last season, has been relatively quiet in the Premier League this term. Joining the Blues for £47.5 million, the 24-year-old fell short of expectations and has failed to adapt to the rugged style of the league, meaning that he has been limited to just five goals in the league; a far cry from the standard he showcased last season. Now, there are several reasons as to why Werner has been failing to find the goal, with one being Frank Lampard’s use of the striker. During the tenure of the former manager, Werner was used in four different positions and that pretty much explains why he is struggling with consistency.

Rhian Brewster - Sheffield United

Splashing a club-record £23.5 million for a player who was yet to make a single Premier League appearance was always going to be a gamble, and that hasn’t really paid off well for Sheffield United this season. The signing of Rhian Brewster from Liverpool received rave reviews considering the fact that he had scored 11 goals in 22 games during his brief loan spell at Swansea City in the 2019-20 Championship season. That £23.5 million, however, has given Sheffield United 734 league minutes, zero goals and as many assists. The 20-year-old has made 18 Premier League appearances so far and averages a mere 0.7 shots per game; certainly not a figure that he wants to be associated with.

Arsenal have completed the signing of Willian from Chelsea on a free transfer, handing the Brazilian a three-year deal worth around £100,000 a week, and the move has left the Arsenal as well as the Chelsea faithful in a split.

Willian, who joined Chelsea in 2013 from Anzhi Makhachkala in bizarre circumstances, has become manager Mikel Arteta's first summer signing. The 32-year-old's preference was to stay at Stamford Bridge, but his contract situation was proving to be a hindrance as he demanded a three-year deal, while the Blues were only willing to offer him a two-year contract.

The Gunners met the winger's demands, and the player took to social media on Sunday to pen down a heart-warming message to the fans, saying,

“They were seven wonderful years. In August 2013 when I received the offer from Chelsea, I was convinced that this was where I had to play. Today I am certain that it was the best of decisions. There were so many happy times, some sad, there were trophies and it was always very intense."

During his seven years with Chelsea, the 32-year-old won two Premier Leagues, an FA Cup, a League Cup and the UEFA Europa League.

“I believe he’s a player that can really make a difference for us," said Mikel Arteta.

"He has the experience of everything in the football world but to still have the ambition to come here and contribute to bring the club where it belongs. I have been really impressed with all the talks I have had with him and how much he wanted to come."

Speaking about his move, Willian said that Arteta was one of the reasons why he decided to join the Gunners.

"I think that with Arteta, Arsenal have a great opportunity to fight again for titles in the Premier League and in Europe so I'm very happy because of that," said Willian.

"When I talked to Mikel, the conversation was good, he gave me confidence to come to Arsenal. He said a lot of good things to me and that's why I have come to Arsenal."

Meanwhile, there a healthy debate on the internet as Arsenal fans believe the club has acquired an experienced Premier League campaigner, while the Chelsea fans seem quite happy given that the player isn't getting any younger.

When it comes to transfers in football, there’s simply one golden rule ?‘It isn’t official till it is official.?/span>

Last minute highjacks and change of hearts are a commonplace when it comes to transfer. Often we see players and clubs ditching moves that they previously agreed upon owing to a better offer from another club or simply not feeling quite right about the transfer.

Perhaps the most memorable one in recent times was Willian’s failed move to Tottenham Hotspur. The winger was flown in to capital by the North Londoners and was undergoing medical ahead of his move from Anzhi Makhachkala, but Chelsea swooped in late and secured his signature, much to the ire of their cross-town rivals.

The transfer window is replete with such tales and below, we take a look at some of the more memorable ones from recent times:

Cristiano Ronaldo - From Arsenal to Manchester United

No fanbase can dwell more about ‘what-ifs?than Arsenal’s.

Arsene Wenger always had a keen eye for talent, however, Arsenal’s finances or a better offer from a rival club have led the club into missing out some of the finest talents in the game. Perhaps none must hurt more than missing out on signing Portuguese superstar, Cristiano Ronaldo.

The five-time Ballon D’Or winner was making headways as a scrawny 18-year-old at Sporting Club De Portugal and Wenger spotted the talent in the kid before anyone else did, and Arsenal agreed a deal with Ronaldo and the club to bring him to North London. But as luck would have it, Manchester United played Sporting in a pre-season friendly where Ronaldo went berserk, skinning the United defence in a brief cameo and giving them a glimpse of his talent.

That is all it took for manager Sir Alex Ferguson to initiate contact with Sporting CP and sign the young winger and the rest, as they say, is history.

Timo Werner ?From Liverpool to Chelsea

Timo Werner’s move to Liverpool was football’s worst kept secret for the longest time. The German striker openly talked about being interested in a move to Merseyside and manager Jurgen Klopp was also keen on bringing in his countryman to bolster an already stacked Liverpool attack.

Liverpool kept negotiating with RB Leipzig in an effort to pay a lower transfer fee than his 60 million euros release clause, however, the German club stood firm on their valuation of their star. With talks at an impasse, Chelsea swooped in and agreed to pay Werner’s clause, leaving it on the German to decide his future. Liverpool failed to convince the striker that they would be able to negotiate a deal for him and thus, the 24-year-old decided to move to London and join Chelsea.

Romelu Lukaku ?From Chelsea to Manchester United

After a public spat with striker Diego Costa, then-Chelsea coach Antonio Conte exiled the Spanish star from the team and zeroed in on Everton striker Romelu Lukaku to lead his attack in the 2017-18 campaign. Chelsea, who had sold Lukaku to Everton in 2014, were negotiating with the Merseyside team for weeks to re-sign the Belgian star but were put off by their 100m valuation of the striker.

Manchester United, who were deep in negotiations with Real Madrid for the transfer of Alvaro Morata, surprised everyone by striking a deal with Everton for Lukaku. United not only met Everton’s valuation but also sweetened the deal by allowing the club’s record goal-scorer Wayne Rooney join his boyhood club on a free transfer.

Chelsea, who missed out on their primary target, were forced to sign Morata, who left the club just 18 months later, while Lukaku, who had a good debut season with United, left in the summer of 2019 to join Inter Milan, where he would finally play under manager Antonio Conte.

Aaron Ramsey ?Manchester United to Arsenal

In June 2008, Manchester United, the reigning European champions, released a statement on their website saying they had struck a deal to sign Cardiff City’s teenage sensation Aaron Ramsey, subject to the player passing a medical.

“Manchester United is delighted to announce it has agreed terms with Cardiff City for the transfer of Aaron Ramsey subject to contract terms being agreed and the player passing a medical,?read the statement

United were under the impression that they had unearthed a long-term replacement for the legendary Paul Scholes at the heart of their midfield. However, little did they know that Arsenal too had an agreement with Cardiff to sign Ramsey and it was up to the player to decide whether he wanted to move to London or Manchester. The Welsh midfielder, surprisingly, opted for Arsenal and spent 11 years at the club before leaving at the end of last season to join Italian giants Juventus on a free.

John Obi Mikel ?Manchester United to Chelsea

Perhaps the most bizarre transfer saga in Premier League history, Nigerian midfielder John Obi Mikel signed for Manchester United from Norwegian club Lyn Oslo, but later disappeared from training only to be found in London.

Mikel, who was earlier spotted sporting a Manchester United jersey, claimed that he was pressured into the signing for the English giants by Lyn Oslo and wasn’t allowed to gauge his option. United, miffed by the unprecedented circumstances, sold the player to Chelsea just a few days later, ending this strange saga. Mikel spent 11 years at Chelsea and won all major titles with the Blues.

Chelsea wingers Willian and Pedro have extended their contracts until the end of the current campaign, the Premier League club announced on Tuesday.

Both Brazilian star Willian and Spanish playmaker Pedro could have left Chelsea on June 30 when their original deals were set to expire.

With the Premier League season set to run until the end of July due to the pandemic hiatus, that would have been a blow to Chelsea's hopes of qualifying for the Champions League.

But now the pair will be able to feature for Frank Lampard's team until the campaign is concluded.

"As a result of the global pandemic and the subsequently delayed conclusion to the campaign, Premier League clubs unanimously agreed to be allowed to enter into short-term contract extensions with players whose deals were due to expire at the end of this month," a Chelsea statement said on Tuesday.

"Willian and Pedro were among those affected, and they and the club have now mutually agreed to extend contracts until the finale of the current season.

"It means they will be available for our remaining Premier League fixtures in 2019/20, as well as any future involvement in the FA Cup and Champions League."

Willian has been a key figure for Chelsea this season, while Pedro has mostly appeared as a substitute.

Chelsea are currently fourth in the Premier League and face Manchester City on Thursday.

They also have an FA Cup quarter-final date with Leicester on Sunday and are still in the Champions League, albeit trailing 3-0 after the first leg of their last 16 tie against Bayern Munich.

The last decade was another eventful one for Chelsea. Having started the period with Carlo Ancelotti at the helm, the Blues changed managers eight times, entering the new decade with club legend Frank Lampard at the helm.

During this period, the west London outfit tasted plenty of success ?three Premier League titles, a UEFA Champions League trophy, two UEFA Europa League trophies, three FA Cups and a League Cup.

In what was a hugely triumphant period for the club, many players came in and went out through the doors at Stamford Bridge. But who stood out to be their worthiest acquisition over the last decade? Lets?take a look;

Juan Mata

Signed from La Liga outfit Valencia in 2011, Juan Mata may not have had the longest of stints at Chelsea, but the Spaniard’s time at the club will be long cherished by the fans.

Mata, during his time with Chelsea, lit up Stamford Bridge with his creativity and slick passing, playing an important role in the club’s first-ever Champions League triumph and was again key in their Europa League success the subsequent season. The midfielder was named Chelsea’s Player of the Year during both these seasons.

With Jose Mourinho returning to the club in 2013, Mata’s game time reduced drastically, due to which he made the switch to Manchester United in January 2014. At Chelsea, the Spanish international made 135 appearances, scoring 32 goals and setting up 58 more, winning a number of trophies and many hearts along the way.

Eden Hazard

Back in 2012, Eden Hazard was one of the most sought-after players, with every top club in England and Europe vying for his signature. So when Chelsea beat everyone else to the punch to land the Belgian from Lille, it was seen as a massive coup. And as the years rolled on, it proved to be a masterstroke for the Blues.

Hazard, during his time with the club, grew into one of the best players across Europe, helping Chelsea to massive success in the process. The Belgian international won two Premier League titles, two Europa League trophies along with domestic cups as well, playing a crucial role in each of those triumphs.

Hazard ended up leaving the club for Real Madrid last summer. In all, the Belgian wing-wizard made 352 appearances for Chelsea, scoring 110 goals and setting up 92 more, claiming a number of individual honours in the process. His trademark runs cutting in from the left-side leaving defenders bamboozled will be long remembered by Chelsea fans as well as the Premier League fans.

Cesar Azpilicueta

Another import from the Ligue 1 in 2012, Cesar Azpilicueta joined Chelsea from Marseille for a fee just under ? million. And boy, what a bargain has he turned out to be for the Londoners!

Azpilicueta may not be among the most naturally gifted players, but he more than makes it up for it with his dedication, commitment and versatility. During his time at Chelsea, the Spaniard has been asked to perform various duties ?right-back, left-back, centre-back, wing-back and every time he has stepped up to the challenge and performed admirably.

A leader on and off the field, Azpilicueta was named the captain at Chelsea following Gary Cahill’s departure. Till date, he has made 374 appearances for the club and at 30 years of age, he still has plenty left in the tank.

Willian

The likes of Diego Costa and Cesc Fabregas were worthy contenders, but Willian’s longevity at the club and the fact that he has more or less been a regular member of the starting XI under every manager that has been at Chelsea since his arrival sees him make this list.

Signed in the summer of 2013 from under the nose of local rivals Tottenham Hotspur, Willian has had his fair share of critics during his time at Chelsea. But the Brazilian has fought through it and has added immense value to this side, helping the Blues achieve plenty of success along the way.

Till date, the 31-year-old has featured 329 times for Chelsea, scoring and assisting 59 goals apiece. The Brazilian has been a senior figurehead this season for a relatively young side under Frank Lampard, but with his contract running out at the end of the season, he could very well be on his way out.

N’Golo Kante

Signed from Leicester City following their surprise Premier League triumph in 2015-16, the diminutive midfielder from France made an immediate impact upon arriving at Chelsea.

Read | Barcelona’s top five signings from the last decade

In his very first season, Kante played a crucial role as Chelsea lifted the Premier League title under Antonio Conte. The Frenchman was duly awarded the Chelsea Player of the Year award, along with the PFA Player of the Year and the FWA Player of the Year honours for that season.

Kante was integral to the Blues?FA Cup triumph the subsequent season and last year’s UEFA Europa League glory as well. The 29-year-old has racked up 164 appearances for the west London outfit till date and has only enhanced his status as one of the best defensive midfielders in the game currently during his time at Chelsea.

Football, a game that is behind the rags to riches story of so many players, is much more than just a game. To many, it is a universe where so many stars are born every year and at the same time, so many stars fall. Let's take a look at some of such stars who are just months away from becoming free agents.

Name: Edinson Cavani

Team: Paris Saint-Germain

Market Value: 25m Euros

Free Agent on: June 30, 2020

The Uruguay international, Edinson Cavani is one of the most lethal goal-machines across leagues and is going to become a free agent in the summer. The 32-year-old has made just 13 appearances in Ligue 1 and Champions League combined, and out of which nine were from the bench. He has scored four goals, three in the league and one in the UCL.

With the signing of Mauro Icardi, it is evident that game-time is bound to dry out. Paris Saint-Germain are looking to get as much as they can for the forward who is definitely not out of touch. Atletico Madrid, one of the possible destinations, saw their 8 million euro bid declined by the club, but they still remain clear favourites to land the player.

Player: Olivier Giroud

Team: Chelsea FC

Market value: 9m Euros

Free Agent on: June 30, 2020

Contrary to Cavani, Giroud is set to face a more uncertain future after his contract expires this summer. The 2018 World Cup winner has featured only five times under Frank Lampard and is yet to score.

Before the closing of the winter transfer window, the likes of Iner, Lazio  and even Tottenham showed interest, but Chelsea decided not to do any business until the end of the season. Another club likely to sign the 33-year-old Frenchman are Lyon as per the recent speculations. It is to be seen which club he decides to join in the summer.

Player: Pedro

Team: Chelsea FC

Market Value: 17m Euros

Free Agent on: June 30th, 2020

Another World Cup winner from Chelsea’s squad is on the verge of becoming a free agent in the summer.

Pedro joined the Blues after a tug of war between Chelsea and Manchester United back in 2015. Fast forward five years and Pedro has played just six Premier League games and has failed to score a single goal.

According to the speculation, Pedro might follow the footprints of his former team-mates to Vissel Kobe in Japan. But Roma are also considering including the versatile winger in their team. Considering Italy becoming the new destination for the Premier League players, it is highly probable that Pedro moves to Roma. But we will have to wait till the summer for the confirmation.

Player: Mario Gotze

Team: Borussia Dortmund

Market Value: 18m Euros

Free Agent on: June 30th, 2020

It has been a whirlwind of a career for Mario Gotze. Since his once in a lifetime goal for Germany in 2014 World Cup final, Gotze has moved from Dortmund to arch-rivals Bayern Munich and back to Dortmund, diagnosed with a possible career-ending physical condition. So, it was just a matter of time before he fell from grace. After scoring thrice in 12 appearances in Bundesliga, the 27-year-old German playmaker is going to become a free agent in the summer.

Given his quality, he will not be short of suitors and recently he has hinted a reunion with Jurgen Klopp. "I often speak to Klopp. We never stopped talking."He knows me very well and that I am always looking for new challenges? the German said. With Lallana also nearing a free transfer, a reunion cannot be ruled out.

Player: Willian

Team: Chelsea

Market Value: 18m Euros

Free Agent on: June 30, 2020

Willian has been one of the most dependable players at Stamford Bridge since his move in 2013. He has 32 goals and 36 assists to his name in the Premier League, but the fact remains that he will turn 32 in August and is less likely to be a part of Frank Lampard's plans in future.

Willian has a decent amount of game time under his belt this season with 24 appearances. His four goals and four assists have made sure that he is still a good enough player for any team. Recently Barcelona expressed their "long-term" admiration for the two-time PL winner, and they might just get him for free in the summer.

Player: Dries Mertens

Team: Napoli

Market Value: 25m Euros

Free Agent On: June 30, 2020

The Belgian star is one of the primary reasons Napoli rose to fame in recent years. His sleek and effective movement in the final third has earned him a lot of suitors in recent times. After 7 long years with the Italian giants, Mertens is going to become a free agent this June.

Chelsea are on the queue to sign the 32-year-old as Lampard looks to bring in experience amongst his otherwise all-youth attack. If Mertens can adjust to the English game remains a mystery that would be solved if he chooses to turn Blue this summer.

Player: Jose Callejon

Team: Napoli

Market Value: 18m Euros

Free Agent On: June 30, 2020

Another cornerstone to the rise of Napoli is the Real Madrid Castilla graduate Jose Callejon. The right-winger joined Napoli in 2013 and has been an integral part of the club since. He has started 22 games this season and has scored two goals while assisting six.

Although no club has expressed their will to sign the midfielder as of now, it is just a matter of time when someone comes up to swoop the deal.

Player: Blaise Matuidi

Team: Juventus

Market Value: 18m Euros

Free Agent On: June 30, 2020

If one has to name a player who has always been out of the spotlight throughout the career, Blaise Matuidi is surely going to be one of the names. The Frenchman is a World Cup winner and has spent his entire career pulling strings from deep inside the midfield. Technically gifted and physically threatening, the 32-year-old is now at Juventus and has featured in 20 games.

Matuidi has always remained a target for many PL clubs and in 2017, Jose Mourinho expressed his will to sign Matuidi to Manchester United. Now that his contract is going to expire in summer, it is to be seen if any English club grabs the opportunity to swoop in on him.

Player: Layvin Kurzawa

Team: Paris Saint-Germain

Market Value: 15m Euros

Free Agent On: June 30, 2020

Another French on the list. Layvin Kurzawa is one of the best in his position but his future at Paris looks to be in jeopardy as Thomas Tuchel has expressed his interest in Juventus full-back Mattia De Sciglio.

Kurzawa has appeared 14 times for PSG, scoring one and assisting one. His contract expires in summer and along with Juventus, Arsenal is also interested in the 27-year-old.

Player: Thomas Meunier

Team: Paris Saint Germain

Market Value: 30m Euros

Free Agent on: June 30, 2020

The Belgian right-back was one of the hottest properties in Europe even a couple of seasons back. He has featured in 16 games for PSG this season and has lodged an assist. He had ruled out the chances of a winter transfer saying "I have the impression when transfers are done in January that they are not thought out but rather a question of necessity."

Amidst talks linking him to England and more precisely to the Emirates and Old Trafford, he is still hopeful of contract renewal to stay in Paris.

Player: Jan Vertonghen

Team: Tottenham Hotspur

Market Value: 18m Euros

Free Agent on: June 30, 2020

The 32-year-old Belgian international has been one of the most prominent figures for Spurs since his move from Ajax. Although Tottenham have expressed their interest in Jack O'Connell, Jan Vertonghen refuses to rule out the chances of another contract renewal.

In the twilight of his career, the Belgian will be a free agent in the summer.

Player: Giacomo Bonaventura

Team: AC Milan

Market Value: 18m Euros

Free Agent On: June 30, 2020

AC Milan are yet to find their mojo since falling from grace in this century. The Italian giants are not even a shadow of their former self at the moment and would require a complete overhaul if they wish to become anything close to competing for glory. Giacomo Bonaventura has been one of the binding figures of the club and has featured regularly for the Rossoneri.

Bonaventura have been having little influence on the game lately and Milan do not look very eager to give him another contract this summer. Having appeared 15 times, the 30-year-old Italian has scored twice but has not created a single goal from the midfield. His destination in summer is still a matter of uncertainty.
